Kia ora koutou,
The Lancet says Palestinian death toll most likely to be 186,000 or more killed by Israel
A report in the UK medical journal The Lancet, has estimated the Palestinian death toll in Israel’s war on Gaza is likely to be 186,000 or more.
The Gaza Ministry of Health count of bodies brought to hospitals or medical facilities stands at over 38,000 – mostly women and children. However the Lancet report is clear that this is a hopeless underestimate which does not, for example, take account of bodies buried in the rubble – estimated by some at 10,000 or more. The report goes on to say:
Armed conflicts have indirect health implications beyond the direct harm from violence. Even if the conflict ends immediately, there will continue to be many indirect deaths in the coming months and years from causes such as reproductive, communicable, and non-communicable diseases. The total death toll is expected to be large given the intensity of this conflict; destroyed health-care infrastructure; severe shortages of food, water, and shelter; the population's inability to flee to safe places; and the loss of funding to UNRWA, one of the very few humanitarian organisations still active in the Gaza Strip.
In recent conflicts, such indirect deaths range from three to 15 times the number of direct deaths. Applying a conservative estimate of four indirect deaths per one direct death
to the 37 396 deaths reported, it is not implausible to estimate that up to 186 000 or even more deaths could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza. Using the 2022 Gaza Strip population estimate of 2 375 259, this would translate to 7·9% of the total population in the Gaza Strip.
The New Zealand government continues its hypocrisy – fulsome condemnation of Russia and support for Ukraine alongside refusal to condemn Israel and miserly, grudging support for the Palestinian victims of Israeli genocide.

1) Send this message to the Prime Minister
Christopher Luxon
Prime Minister
c.luxon@ministers.govt.nz
Kia ora Mr Luxon,
I note you made this tweet last week.
Are you also shocked at the massacre of 90 Palestinian civilians by Israeli airstrikes on "safe zones" in Gaza?
Are your thoughts also with these victims and their families?
Should Palestinians have had to encounter 76 years of brutal political violence from Israel?
Please respond without unnecessary delay.

2) Write a letter of support for Gaza at www.lettersforgaza.org (see more details later in this newsletter)
3) Endorse our “Letter of Demand” to hold the government and key government ministers, to account for failing to uphold New Zealand’s legal responsibilities under the Genocide Convention. You can do this here.

Reminder: Date change to 10 August for nationwide rallies and protests
August 10 was agreed at our last national meeting as the date for a big push to get a mass turnout in support of Palestine across the country. We will have more details in future newsletters but mark this day in your diary as a MUST ATTEND for your local Palestine solidarity activity.
Remember what Israel says about the Olympics – sportswashing to help normalise genocide!
“Every time we succeed in hearing the Israeli anthem play in the background while our flag flies overhead is in my eyes worth everything,” says Israeli Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar.

Gardens for Palestine
Peggy Kelly hosted Mazin and Jessie Qumsiyeh on their visit to Ōtautahi/Christchurch on their tour of New Zealand. Peggy has written this piece for our newsletter:
In the face of Genocide and an Ecocide how can we begin to imagine a Land of Milk and Honey – or even a land of Just Enough?
It’s beyond imagination; today’s evil is too much an obstacle. The rubble-heaped graveyards are everywhere. Life is a bone-dry existence on the Strip.
Water is scarce and the grief is too great; where do we start?
We can only begin from wherever we are – from our own comparatively comfortable place.
After the Christchurch earthquakes our recovery was supported by kind strangers acting randomly with surprising empathy.
It’s this collective empathy that Gaza and indeed the whole of Palestine needs now – it needs our unconditional love.
Bethlehem University has the capacity to propagate plants. Just like GapFiller did for Christchurch, the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability can do for Palestine. They have a gardener, research students, volunteers and spare glasshouses. They can, with help from us, prepare for life after war.
Propagating fruit and shade trees to be part of a tentative restorative strategy in a devastated Concentration Camp is a powerful idea.
Imagine not just a cease-fire but rebuilding and replanting. Imagine the gradual restoration of the land for the sustenance of its people.
Imagine helping to get that process underway…

UN experts declare famine has spread throughout Gaza Strip
GENEVA (9 July 2024) – The recent deaths of more Palestinian children due to hunger and malnutrition leaves no doubt that famine has spread across the entire Gaza strip, a group of independent experts* said today.
“Fayez Ataya, who was barely six months old, died on 30 May 2024 and 13-year-old Abdulqader Al-Serhi died on 1 June 2024 at the Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir Al-Balah. Nine-year-old Ahmad Abu Reida died on 3 June 2024 in the tent sheltering his displaced family in Al-Mawasi, Khan Younis. All three children died from malnutrition and lack of access to adequate healthcare,” the experts said.
“With the death of these children from starvation despite medical treatment in central Gaza, there is no doubt that famine has spread from northern Gaza into central and southern Gaza.”
The experts said the death of a child from malnutrition and dehydration indicates that health and social structures have been attacked and are critically weakened. “When the first child dies from malnutrition and dehydration, it becomes irrefutable that famine has taken hold,” the experts said.
“We declare that Israel’s intentional and targeted starvation campaign against the Palestinian people is a form of genocidal violence and has resulted in famine across all of Gaza. We call upon the international community to prioritise the delivery of humanitarian aid by land by any means necessary, end Israel’s siege, and establish a ceasefire.”
“When a 2-month-old baby and 10-year-old Yazan Al Kafarneh died of hunger on 24 February and 4 March respectively, this confirmed that famine had struck northern Gaza. The whole world should have intervened earlier to stop Israel’s genocidal starvation campaign and prevented these deaths,” the experts said. “Thirty-four Palestinians have died from malnutrition since 7 October, the majority being children. Inaction is complicity.”
The experts: Michael Fakhri, Special Rapporteur on the right to food; Balakrishnan Rajagopal, Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, Tlaleng Mofokeng, Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, Francesca Albanese, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967; Pedro Arrojo-Agudo, Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation, Paula Gaviria Betancur,Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons; George Katrougalos, Independent Expert on the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order; Barbara G. Reynolds (Chair), Bina D’Costa, Dominique Day and Catherine Namakula, Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent
Special Rapporteurs, Independent Experts and Working Groups are part of what is known as the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council. Comprising the largest body of independent experts in the UN Human Rights system, Special Procedures is the general name of the Council's independent fact-finding and monitoring mechanisms that address either specific country situations or thematic issues in all parts of the world. Special Procedures experts work on a voluntary basis; they are not UN staff and do not receive a salary for their work. They are independent from any government or organization and serve in their individual capacity.
Message from the International Solidarity Movement: On the ground support needed in the Occupied West Bank
**Join the International Solidarity Movement in Palestine: Long-Term Volunteers Needed!**
The International Solidarity Movement (ISM) in Palestine is seeking dedicated long-term volunteers to join our efforts in standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people. ISM is a Palestinian led movement founded in 2001 committed to resisting the long-entrenched and systematic oppression and dispossession of the Palestinian population, using non-violent, direct-action methods and principles
**Minimum Commitment:** 2 weeks
**Maximum Commitment:** As long as your visa allows
While a minimum commitment of 2 weeks is required, staying for longer periods, especially 3 months, greatly enhances the continuity and impact of our work. As we grow and strengthen our connections with local families and communities, an extended presence is invaluable.
**Why Stay Longer?**
**Continuity:** Longer stays help maintain the momentum of our initiatives and relationships.
**Impact:** A deeper understanding of the situation on the ground.
**Support:** We strive to assist volunteers staying for 3 months in making their stay more financially sustainable.
Join us in supporting the Palestinian popular resistance to the Israeli occupation and apartheid. We stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people's just demand for freedom.
**Get Involved Today!**

Obela in August
Get ready to take some serious action in August to stop New Zealand supermarkets stocking Obela Hummus.
We are preparing a comprehensive campaign to get rid of this product from our supermarket shelves throughout the country in August!
We have written to both supermarket chains (Woolworths and Foodstuffs) but have received no response. It’s time for consumer action!
Obela is 50% owned by Israel’s largest food company, Strauss Group, which is known for its support of the Israeli military, namely the elite Golani and Givati infantry brigades, whom they fund and provide care packages for.
Looking out for government MPs
“Pitiful in the face of genocide” – yes that’s our government. It still hasn’t even reached first base in responding to the industrial scale slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza. First base would be to condemn Israel and call for an immediate permanent ceasefire.
We need to challenge government MPs in National, New Zealand First and Act.
If you come across information with details of where any of these MPs will be for speaking or have meeting engagements, then please contact us urgently so we can organise to protest and challenge them.

What is PSNA and how does it work?
Sometime people ask questions about PSNA structure and how we work. Here is a simple overview.
Our aims:
PSNA’s aims are on the front page of our website here.
Our aims can be summed up as working to get the majority of people in Aotearoa New Zealand on board with supporting Palestine and turning that support into effective political pressure on our government to hold Israel to account for its myriad war crimes against the people of Palestine.
Structure:
PSNA in its current form was established at a national meeting of Palestine solidarity activists from around the country held in Christchurch in 2019. PSNA is not a Palestinian organisation but is a Palestine solidarity organisation which takes its lead from Palestinian-led campaigns here and overseas such as the international Palestinian-led BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement.
As the name indicates, PSNA is a national network of independent organisations which support the aims of PSNA (see above) Each organisation in the network makes its own decisions about what and when they will take action in support of Palestine. Currently there are 29 centres around the country which have groups that are part of the network.
The network has a national meeting each year which elects the National Chair, Deputy National Chair(s) and National Secretary/Treasurer. People in these positions are accountable to the national committee and to our annual national meetings. The rest of the national committee is made up of representatives from any/all of the groups who are part of the network. These network reps are approved by the national meeting rather than being elected as such.
The current National Chair is John Minto, Deputy National Chair is Layan Khalil and National Secretary/Treasurer is Neil Scott. There are at least five Palestinians on the national committee.
Our last national meeting was held in May this year and because of the big influx of new people from around the country and the need to include them in the movement, it was decided to prepare the way for a possible new structure and new leadership before a follow up national meeting is held in Wellington in late November.
In the meantime PSNA has established several “working groups” made up of volunteers from this year’s national meeting which are looking at national strategy, letter-writing, BDS campaigning etc
The network has national monthly meetings on Zoom – sometime more frequently as needed – where all centres in the network are invited to be represented.
National mailing list:
The national committee has an email database of around 10,000 people and is putting out a weekly national newsletter during the genocide. Fortnightly newsletters were sent out before October 7th last year.
We encourage local groups in the network to feed in names so we can continually build the database as it gives us a bigger base to organise from into the future.
Finances:
The national committee runs a national bank account for the network. The bank account has four signatories, two of which are needed to authorise every payment. All payments are based on invoices or receipts for bills already paid. The National Secretary/Treasurer presents a breakdown of income and expenditure for the previous calendar year at each national meeting as would be expected in any organisation.
Where does our money come from?
Most money comes in from donations. We have a group of people who make automatic payments each month as well as those (the majority) who send donations when they are able. We also collect money at rallies and protests – in some cases these stay with the local group if they have their own local account, in other cases this money goes into our national bank account.
Local groups also engage in various fundraising activities which contribute either to local funds or go into the national account.
What do we spend money on?
We fund political work in line with our aims (see above) and this covers a wide range of things. For example:
Leaflets, posters, advertising and other promotional materials as well as postage to send materials around the motu. This has also included supply of speaker and other equipment, flags, banner materials for new local groups.
Travel for overseas speakers eg PSNA paid for all the internal travel and most of the accommodation costs for Professor Mazin Qumsiyeh and his wife Jessie on their three-week tour here in May/June. Funding for other visits in recent years include Nasser Mashni (APAN), Salman Abu Sitta (Palestine Land Society), Antony Loewenstein (author “The Palestine Laboratory”), Miko Peled (author “The General’s Son”), Gideon Levy, etc
PSNA costs associated with the 2023 visit of the UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese.
We paid for John Minto and Layan Khalil to travel to South Africa for the First Global Conference on Israeli Apartheid in May this year.
A series of newspaper adds which helped keep Palestine high on the public agenda
We pay local organising expenses in some cases – eg a mass leafletting in Te Tau Ihu – the north of the South Island and 50,000 leaflets for Ōtautahi/Christchurch.
Travel costs to meetings with ministers and government officials, including Palestinian representation.
Travel costs to meet with senior media representatives, including Palestinian representation.
It’s important to say we don’t make charitable donations for humanitarian work in Gaza. It is not in our aims although we do list four charitable organisations on our website for people who want to do so and ask us for advice. We have also provided funding for the Gaza Centre of Human Rights over many years for their work documenting Israeli war crimes.

Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign?
We will need some serious money to make our campaign as effective as possible. For example, we will need somewhere in the vicinity of $25,000 to bring speakers to New Zealand over the next year and organise large public meetings to help spread the message.
You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)
