Genocide Hotline – action that will save Palestinian lives

The genocide hotline we launched last week has taken off. It has enthused our supporters with a campaign which gets civil society to act when our government cowers. Israel has committed genocide in Gaza and is about to resume its indiscriminate killing of tens of thousands of Palestinians.

This campaign will do more to save Palestinian lives than any other initiative we have taken so far in the campaign against Israel’s genocide. The message to Israel is that they may have the New Zealand government in their pocket but New Zealand civil society will take action to hold Israel to account for the genocide they are perpetrating in Gaza.

As is to be expected the pro-Israel lobby is squirming and trying to claim the campaign in somehow anti-semitic. These people would find anti-semitism in the words “the” and “and” if it was all they had to go on. They are furious we are telling genocidal Israeli soldiers they are not welcome here while never speaking a word of criticism of Israel for its daily war crimes.

Through our poster, the message on the genocide hotline and our publicity we are making it clear what the campaign is doing and what it is NOT about. The focus is NOT on Israelis – the focus is on IDF soldiers and reservists here for “rest and recreation” from the industrial-scale killing of Palestinians.

Our supporters have welcomed the campaign and the poster and media release have been widely shared on social media. The actions we take with the information that is coming in will be clear and consistent – these Israeli soldiers are not welcome here.

The most important message the campaign sends is to Israel and says that even if western governments are complicit in genocide, civil society in the western world does not accept Israeli impunity for war crimes. In that sense it’s a disruptive campaign from the cosy position Israel enjoys through government inaction here.

Of everything we have done in the past 16 months – this action is one that will save Palestinian lives.

The campaign has been reported here in the NZ Herald and here in Stuff

Two other media releases we have issued about the campaign over the past few days

Tuesday 28th January:

Predictable lineup of apologists for Israel attack PSNA campaign

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Winston Peters, the Chief Human Rights Commissioner Stephen Rainbow and the New Zealand Jewish Council have lined up to protect Israeli soldiers in New Zealand on “rest and recreation” from the industrial-scale killing of Palestinians in Gaza.

“We are not surprised to see such a predictable lineup of apologists for Israel and its genocide in Gaza from lining up to attack a PSNA campaign with false smears of anti-semitism”, says PSNA National Chair John Minto.

“Why is concern for the sensitivities of soldiers from a genocidal Israeli campaign more important than condemning the genocide itself?”

Over 16 months Mr Peters has done absolutely nothing to put any pressure on Israel to end its genocidal behaviour but is full of bluff and bluster and outright lies to denounce those who demand Israel be held to account.

If Mr Peters was doing his job he would not only stop Israeli soldiers coming here (as per Russian soldiers) but he would also support the recent International Court of Justice ruling and deny visas to any Israeli with an address in an illegal Israeli settlement in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

The Human Rights Commission has issued a disingenuous media release – our campaign has nothing to do with Israelis or Jews – it is a campaign to stop Israeli soldiers coming here for rest and recreation after a campaign of wholesale killing of Palestinians in Gaza. To imply the campaign is targeting Jews is disgusting and despicable.

Some of the soldiers will be Druse, some Palestinian Arabs and others will be Jews.

In the meantime PSNA salutes the brave Israelis who have refused to take part in the genocide.

The deeply racist New Zealand Jewish Council regularly makes a meal of false smears of anti-semitism and they are at it again here. It’s deeply problematic that this Jewish Council strategy takes attention away from the real anti-semitism which exists in New Zealand and around the world.

“The priority of the Jewish Council is to protect Israel from criticism and protect it from accountability for its apartheid policies, ethnic cleansing and genocide”.

We are demanding that accountability.

Wednesday 29th January:

The government has begun to “go through the motions” of questioning Israeli soldiers at the border but it’s just a “look busy” policy – too little too late!

The government has begun questioning Israeli soldiers about their military service in Gaza at the New Zealand border as revealed in a Times of Israel story today which says:

“New Zealand’s government immigration authority has begun to require Israelis applying for a visa to report details of their military service as a condition for entry, and at least one person has been denied admission after doing so, The Times of Israel has learned”

However, the details of the questions asked reveals the government is simply “going through the motions” to weed out possible war criminals.

The key questions asked are:

  • “Have you been associated with any intelligence service or group, or law enforcement agency?”

  • “Have you been associated with any group or organization that has used or promoted violence or human rights abuses to further their aims?”

  • “Have you committed or been involved in war crimes, crimes against humanity, or human rights abuses?”

It’s obvious how every soldier will answer those questions and New Zealand is none the wiser.

What the story also reveals is that the rejection rate for visas for Israelis coming here has not changed since the genocide began in Gaza.

An analysis of INZ statistical data indicates that the rejection rate for Israeli visa applications to New Zealand during the war has been approximately four percent. This is not unusually high compared to previous years or the rejection rates for citizens of other developed countries.

It’s clear the questioning of Israeli soldiers is not revealing people involved in war crimes and is a “look busy” policy. This gives more reason for the government to adopt PSNA policy and suspend all visas for anyone who has served in the IDF since 7 October 2023.

The government must also uphold the International Court of Justice Advisory opinion (19 July 2024) which calls on the government to end support for Israel’s illegal occupation. This means we should also deny entry to every Israeli wanting to visit here who has an address in an illegal Israeli settlement in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Something you can do now with just a few clicks…

Stephen Rainbow

Write a complaint to the Human Rights Commission about Israel soldiers coming to New Zealand for rest and recreation after taking part in the genocide in Gaza.

Stephen Rainbow
Chief Human Rights Commissioner
infoline@hrc.co.nz

Kia ora Mr Rainbow,

Israeli soldiers in New Zealand from the genocide in Gaza

I want the Human Rights Commission to insist the government suspend visas for any Israeli soldier or reservist who has served in the IDF since October 7th 2023.

I also want the Human Rights Commission to uphold the International Court of Justice Advisory opinion of 19 July 2024 which calls on the government to end support for Israel’s illegal occupation. This means the HRC must press the government to deny entry to every Israeli wanting to visit here who has an address in an illegal Israeli settlement in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly.

Arundhati Roy delivers a passionate critique of the oppression faced by Palestinians

Arundhati Roy delivers a passionate critique of the oppression faced by Palestinians, highlighting the historical context and ongoing violence resulting from Israel's occupation. They call for a broader understanding of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza , condemning the complicity of the US and other powerful nations while challenging the idea of the US as a neutral mediator. Advocating for the right of Palestinians to resist their oppression, the speaker draws parallels to other groups fighting against colonialism and apartheid. Additionally, they underscore the resilience of those in Gaza and Lebanon, advocating for a hopeful outlook on the liberation struggle as an ongoing commitment rather than a fleeting endeavour, encouraging listeners to remain focused on the long-term goal of freedom and justice for Palestine.

Quotes of the week

“There must be a reckoning. Those who continued supplying weapons to Israel ought to be put on trial for helping to facilitate it. Those who used their media platforms to justify it should see their reputations in tatters. Without that accountability, even more depraved violence will become normal, even acceptable.”

—Owen Jones; independent journalist

“As the ceasefire takes effect, significantly increased amounts of humanitarian aid will finally be allowed into Gaza. That aid will need to be distributed, a role UNRWA will lead as the ‘backbone’ of the humanitarian operation in Gaza. The UNRWA ban will therefore create a contradiction — just as more aid is coming in, the logistical support for this will be destroyed.”

—Peace Research Institute, Oslo

Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign?

We will need some serious money to make our campaign as effective as possible. For example, we will need somewhere in the vicinity of $25,000 to bring speakers to New Zealand over the next year and organise large public meetings to help spread the message.

You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)
