New Zealand government urged to back ICC arrest warrants for Israeli leaders without equivocation
PSNA welcomes the decision of the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.
“The warrants mean for the first time Israeli leaders face accountability for war crimes which have been live-streamed on social media for the past 13 months” says PSNA National Chair John Minto.
“We are waiting for our government to announce it will arrest Netanyahu and Gallant immediately if they set foot in Aotearoa New Zealand”
“It’s a breath of fresh air from the stultifying refusal of New Zealand and other western governments to act against the perpetrators of industrial-scale slaughter of Palestinian civilians”, says John Minto. “This ICC decision is a wake-up call for our government which can no longer stay silent”
“New Zealand has been a staunch ally of the US/Israel throughout the past 13 months when it should have been a staunch defender of international law”
“Unbelievably, our government still refuses to call for an immediate, permanent ceasefire and while it has condemned every act of Palestinian resistance, it has refused to condemn any of the egregious Israeli war crimes which are the subject of the arrest warrants”
In response to the ICC decision New Zealand should immediately end support for Israel to continue its war crimes such as
Suspend all satellite launches by Rocket lab for BlackSky Technology, Capella Space, and HawkEye 360. These companies provide imaging data used by Israeli for its targeting of civilian infrastructure in Gaza and Lebanon (See 13 November PSNA media release)
Suspend and independently investigate the export of crystal oscillators from Rakon Industries which end up in bombs used for war crimes in Gaza and Lebanon.
Sanctions against Israel are also essential and the ICC decision can be the trigger.
“New Zealand needs to act as we did when the ICC issued arrest warrants against Russian leader Vladimir Putin for the invasion of Ukraine” says John Minto. “New Zealand imposed immediate and wide-ranging sanctions against Russia and must follow through with Israel”.

Last few days to tell ASB – I won’t Bank with Apartheid
Right now, ASB KiwiSaver funds have over $14 million invested in Motorola Solutions Inc. who are part of a United Nations list of 116 companies enabling illegal Israeli settlements.4 They are the technology and surveillance arm of the Israeli military and have custom built technologies for this occupying force. Their technology is used in illegal settlements, checkpoints, in the illegal “separation barrier” and by the military.5 Due to the recent ruling at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) there is now also a legal case that we should not be doing business with companies like Motorola.
We are asking ASB to make a choice: divest its KiwiSaver funds from Motorola Solutions Inc. or watch your customers switch en masse on November 29th, Day of Solidarity with Palestinians.
Whether or not you have a Kiwisaver with ASB.
Victory with Obela – what’s next?
Earlier this week you will have received our newsletter on the BDS Victory in the Obela campaign.
It’s great to have been part of such a positive forward step and a huge thanks to all our supporters for our part in this global campaign.
So where to from here?
Some of our supporters have pointed out that Obela will now be wholly owned by Pepsico which is itself on BDS lists.
This is true and because there is no end to the companies we should be boycotting, we deliberately narrowed our BDS priorities to six products so we could run national campaigns with all our supporters working together. Our priority list is:
Obela
Ahava
Sodastream
HP (Hewlett Packard)
BP and Caltex
McDonald’s
We targeted Obela specifically because of its ownership by Israel’s Strauss Group which directly supports and provides “care packages” for Israeli army units involved in the genocide. That link will now be cut by the end of this year – the boycott is on till the end of the year!
Soda stream is also owned by Pepsico but is on the list for different reasons. As the BDS website says:
“Soda Steam is actively complicit in Israel's policy of displacing the indigenous Bedouin-Palestinian citizens of Israel in the Naqab (Negev). SodaStream have a long history of mistreatment of and discrimination against Palestinian workers”
A good report on this is here https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/2015/9/25/sodastream-factory-shows-palestinian-bedouins-plight
We will discuss our next steps with BDS priorities at a national zoom meeting this Sunday. Sodastream looks a good next target… (Farmers were advertising it on TV last week)
We could move on to Pepsico at some point but don’t have the resources for this at present.
More in the next newsletter…
Three things you can do this week to support Palestine with just a few clicks…

2. Write to the Prime Minister asking for New Zealand to speak out and back up the International Criminal Court warrants for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.

Speak up and support arrest warrants for Israeli war crimional leaders
Across the world many countries have spoken out to support the International Criminal Court and have said they will enforce its decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes against the Palestinian people of Gaza.
New Zealand has been silent.
It’s not acceptable to me that the government is not only refusing to speak out and condemn the industrial-scale slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza and now Lebanon but is refusing to say if it will arrest these Israeli war criminials if they set foot in Aotearoa New Zealand.
I expect you to speak out for me rather than rather than once more offer complicity for US/Israeli war crimes through your silence.
Speak up so humanity hears us.
I look forward to your quick response.

Statement From Palestinian Leaders: Hīkoi Mō Te Tiriti Is A Historic Moment For All In Aotearoa
This statement was made the day before last week’s historic hikoi to parliament:
We, the undersigned Palestinians, believe the Hīkoi mō te Tiriti is a historic moment for all in Aotearoa. We share this statement to strengthen our community’s commitment to working alongside Māori and tāngata Tiriti to achieve te Tiriti justice.
Over the last year, thousands of iwi Māori, Pākehā and tauiwi have stood with us for Palestinian rights. We call on supporters of the Palestinian cause —a cause for justice, freedom and self-determination— to do what is in alignment with these values. Standing against settler colonialism in Palestine means standing against it here too.
Inspired by the kotahitanga of te ao Māori, we draw on our own political tradition of nurturing a unified Palestinian people despite exile and separation. We unify here for te Tiriti.
Our commitment is enduring. It is a commitment fastened to honouring the land we stand on – its truth, its history and its people. The land remembers, and we must remember with it. We commit to a different kind of Aotearoa and a better world. One free from the racism that sits at the foundations of all colonising nations.
As tāngata Tiriti, we know that our ability to live here ethically means recognising that Māori never ceded their rights to determine their own futures in their own lands. No Indigenous people ever have, could or would. Every dispossession of a people from their land is a claim of one people's inferiority under another people's superiority.
The intent of the rangatira who signed te Tiriti o Waitangi was to allow other peoples to live here in a way that was mutually respectful of each other’s rights. Balance and interdependence. Not permission for domination, settler government rule and land theft.
Knowledge of injustice is a responsibility to act. Te Tiriti sets out an honourable way for us to live here. It is our duty and privilege to work alongside iwi, hapū and tāngata Tiriti to end the re-writing of this country’s history. Today, that means walking alongside Māori to oppose the The Treaty Principles Bill. Every day, that means respecting the authority of mana whenua in our rohe. We can and must do more here.
Lastly, as Palestinians, we know what it is to endure colonial violence. And though the timelines and technologies are different, the racist lies remain the same. They are being used against our people in real time during one of the greatest and most documented crimes of the century: genocide and ethnic cleansing.
Settler colonial nations are built and expanded through violence. During settlement this violence is brazenly genocidal. Other times it is quieter: efforts to eradicate a people through cultural erasure, mass incarceration, institutional racism and denial. No matter the form, this is wrong.
We are joined in an intergenerational and global struggle without end. Let us build the movements capable of bringing about a more just future from Aotearoa to Palestine.
We can and we are.

A word about Toitu Te Tiriti
Our whāinga (goals) today are to continue to build foundations for a better Aotearoa. This means our momentum must continue and our voices heard.
A. We must stop the Treaty Principles Bill which is trying to undermine the tapu and mana of the Tiriti. The Bill proposed by ACT and supported by the coalition government represents a significant threat to New Zealand's constitutional framework and social cohesion. This legislation is widely criticised as continuing pattern of bad faith actions by the Crown, throughout hitori of Aotearoa/New Zealand. “Kill the bill” .
B. Educate or acquire mātauranga!
Take this time to educate ourselves, research history, listen to Māori scholars and academics, there are helpful tangata tiriti groups like ActionStation. Check out FB: renound experts like Tina Ngata of Ngāti Paoa (expert on all things Tiriti, integrity humility, organised), Tōitu Te Tiriti and FB Te Pāti Māori there are helpful answers to the submission process. Māori Green Lantern, Tāmaki Treaty Workers, He Tangata are helpful too.
C. EVERYONE is busting out the templates for submissions, guides and workshops (ActionStation Aotearoa, Green Party, Roimata Smail human rights lawyer). Find a place/space/voice that works for you. You can do the direct way via the Parliament website and make a direct submission individually or as a group through the portal Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Bill,
D. REMINDER - Make your submission against the Treaty Principles bill. Deadline is 7th January 2025 (Tuesday).
E. Also, for tangata whenua “whakarongo mai” register to vote on the Māori roll from the general roll.
G. My wero (challenge) to you is to educate and update, submit, register and vote for a better future for our mokopuna!

Quotes of the week – Bernie Sanders
“I have met with doctors who have served in Gaza, treating hundreds of patients a day without electricity, anesthesia or clean water, including dozens of children arriving with gunshot wounds to the head. All of this is unspeakable and immoral. But what makes it even more painful is that much of this death and destruction has been carried out with U.S. weaponry and paid for by American taxpayers. During the last year alone, the United States has provided $18 billion in military aid to Israel and delivered more than 50,000 tons of armaments and military equipment. In other words, as Americans, we are complicit in these horrific and illegal atrocities.
Our complicity must end.”
—Senator Bernie Sanders, US Congress
“You do not effectively combat terrorism by starving thousands of innocent children. You do not effectively combat terrorism by bombing schools and hospitals.
You do not effectively combat terrorism by turning virtually the entire world against your country.”
—Senator Bernie Sanders; I-VT, US Congress

Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign?
We will need some serious money to make our campaign as effective as possible. For example, we will need somewhere in the vicinity of $25,000 to bring speakers to New Zealand over the next year and organise large public meetings to help spread the message.
You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)
