Television New Zealand: Stop telling us porkies!
Last week we gave details of the blatant lies reported by Television New Zealand when they inverted the truth by attributing attacks by racist Maccabi Tel Aviv fans to an “anti-semitic pogrom” against Israeli fans!
PSNA requested an apology and correctly to the propaganda reported by TVNZ but so far only a stoney silence has followed.
After the initial propaganda report, TVNZ further reported a few days later that in response to “anti-semitism” seen in Amsterdam, French police were brought in to escort racist Israeli hooligans to and from a game in Paris to protect them from “anti-semitic attacks”!
Here is a screenshot from the video TVNZ used to claim “anti-semitic attacks” on Israeli fans.
However the person who made the video complained immediately that it showed the precise opposite of what TVNZ claimed in its story.
Rocket Lab’s Māhia launches linked to Israeli military intelligence
Newsroom reported on PSNA letters to Minister of Space Judith Collins and Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck last week. The article is paywalled so we are reprinting in full here:
The Government is under pressure to deny or revoke launch permits for intelligence satellites with links to the Israeli military.
New Zealand-founded Rocket Lab has contracts to launch satellites for geospatial intelligence firms BlackSky Technology, Capella Space, and HawkEye 360, all of which have links to the Israeli Ministry of Defense.
Rocket Lab hasn’t launched any HawkEye 360 satellites from New Zealand but has been launching BlackSky satellites since 2019.
Rocket Lab aims to begin deploying Black Sky’s constellation of next-generation satellites later this year in five separate launches from the Māhia Peninsula on the East Cape.
These satellites will include shortwave infrared scanning that will enable imaging at night and through clouds.
It is not clear whether the BlackSky launches from New Zealand are part of the company’s work for the Israeli Defense Force.
All three companies are sponsors of a geospatial intelligence conference taking place in Israel in January next year, with the Israeli Ministry of Defense and BlackSky listed among the conference’s leading partners.
Geospatial intelligence is the practice of using mapping and imagery analysis to generate information.
The links go further than the conference, with trade media organisation Intelligence Online reporting that BlackSky is party to a secret $150 million contract with Israel to supply high temporal frequency images and analysis.
Israel Defense Force’s artificial intelligence systems utilise geospatial data to select strike targets in Gaza and in Lebanon.
While the nature and existence of the deal between BlackSky and Israel appear only to be reported with confidence by Intelligence Online, Space Minister Judith Collins seems to be aware of its existence.
In a written question from October, Green Party Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Teanau Tuiono asked if Collins was aware that BlackSky had a contract to supply high temporal frequency images and analysis to the Israeli Ministry of Defense and whether that could prohibit future launches from New Zealand.
In response, the Space Minister said, “Yes, I am aware. National interest for payload permit applications under the Outer Space and High-altitude Activities Act 2017 is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.”
Newsroom asked Collins if she was concerned about the nature of these launches, and how they gel with New Zealand’s United Nations stance and New Zealand’s Outer Space and High-altitude Activities Act 2017.
Collins addressed these questions with a single paragraph: “New Zealand is committed to the safe, responsible, secure and sustainable use of space. All space activities must be consistent with New Zealand’s international obligations and not be contrary to New Zealand’s national interest and national security.”
Earlier this week the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa’s chair John Minto wrote to both Collins and Rocket Lab founder/chief executive Peter Beck saying it believed the launches constituted a breach of the Outer Space and High-altitude Activities Act.
The solidarity network told Collins if payload permits for Rocket Lab’s intended launches for BlackSky had been approved they should be revoked.
The Space Act requires the proposed operation of the payload or payloads of a launch from New Zealand soil to be consistent with New Zealand’s international obligations.
Minto said despite assertions to the contrary, it was clear residential buildings have regularly been identified for targeting by Israel’s artificial intelligence systems.
A recent report from the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights found that nearly 70 percent of the 8,119 verified deaths during the first six months of Israel’s war in Gaza (more than 34,500 people reportedly killed in this period) were women and children.
Alongside the United Nations resolution, in May the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has sought arrest warrants for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and defence minister Yoav Gallant.
No decision has been made on whether to issue the warrants.
Minto said allowing those payloads to be launched from New Zealand “will very likely assist Israel to commit further international crimes”.
He believed this would fall foul of the Rome Statute, the treaty that established and enables the International Criminal Court.
Asked if payloads it had launched for BlackSky, Capella Space or HawkEye 360 had been used to inform Israeli air strikes, a Rocket Lab spokesperson said, “Commercial satellite imagery and data are vital tools for disaster and humanitarian response, emergency management, national security, commerce, and environmental monitoring around the world.”
The company also said all payloads had to meet a series of tests under the Outer Space and High-altitude Activities Act.
Rocket Lab did not acknowledge Newsroom’s question asking if it disputed any aspects of the letter sent to founder and chief executive Peter Beck by the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa.
Green Party foreign affairs spokesperson Teanau Tuiono said: “It’s unacceptable for New Zealand infrastructure to be used for any activities linked to Israel’s ongoing attacks on civilian populations in Palestinian territories and Lebanon.
“We must ensure that our country is not party to crimes against humanity. The lack of transparency from the Government is not good enough.
“If the Government cannot give an assurance that satellites launched from the Māhia Peninsula spaceport are not providing data or intelligence for use by Israel, then the permit must be revoked.”
Three things you can do this week to support Palestine with just a few clicks…
1. Get the new BDS app – more details later in this newsletter
2. Demand an apology from TVNZ for their blatant misreporting on the soccer hooliganism in Amsterdam.
Television New Zealand
Request for immediate apology
https://corporate.tvnz.co.nz/contact/make-a-formal-complaint/
Dear TVNZ,
Request for immediate apology for gross misreporting
Please issue an immediate apology for your report on 1 News on November 9th in which you used footage of Maccabi Tel Aviv soccer fans attacking Dutch soccer fans with the claim this showed anti-semitic attacks on Israeli fans.
The fact you did not issue an immediate apology for the misuse of this footage is unacceptable. Please rectify this immediately.

3. Write a note to Minister of Space Judith Collins and copy it to your local MP. You can write your own or copy and paste this to the minister
Hon Judith Collins KC
Minister for Space
J.Collins@ministers.govt.nz
Dear Minister,
RE: Contribution of Rocket Lab USA satellite launches to commission of international crimes by Israel
I write to you to express serious concern regarding planned satellite launches by Rocket Lab for geospatial intelligence companies from its spaceport on the Māhia Peninsula.
It seems clear that satellites Rocket Lab has launched are being used by Israel to commit international crimes in Gaza and in Lebanon. We believe that further planned launches – at least those for BlackSky Technology - will assist Israel to commit further international crimes, including war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide in Gaza.
Rocket Lab is currently contracted to launch satellites for BlackSky Technology, Capella Space, and HawkEye 360. Each of these US-based companies produce military intelligence, which they sell to governments around the world.
All three companies are sponsors of a geospatial intelligence conference in Israel taking place in January 2025 (Ramon GeoInt360), of which the Israel Ministry of Defense and BlackSky are “leading partners” and HawkEye 360 and Capella Space are sponsors.
In particular BlackSky has a US $150 million contract to supply high temporal frequency images and analysis to Israel – images which are inevitably used to target civilian infrastructure and contribute to Israeli war crimes in Gaza and Lebanon.
Please take action immediately and refuse permission for any satellite launches by Rocket Lab involving these three companies.
Please respond to me quickly on this request.
Ngā mihi.

We are reviewing Kiwisaver investments linked to Gaza: ASB Boss
Help ASB make the right decision…
Right now, ASB KiwiSaver funds have over $14 million invested in Motorola Solutions Inc. who are part of a United Nations list of 116 companies enabling illegal Israeli settlements.4 They are the technology and surveillance arm of the Israeli military and have custom built technologies for this occupying force. Their technology is used in illegal settlements, checkpoints, in the illegal “separation barrier” and by the military.5 Due to the recent ruling at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) there is now also a legal case that we should not be doing business with companies like Motorola.
We are asking ASB to make a choice: divest its KiwiSaver funds from Motorola Solutions Inc. or watch your customers switch en masse on November 29th, Day of Solidarity with Palestinians.
Whether or not you have a Kiwisaver with ASB.

Quote of the week
“Generations of Israelis will have to live with what we have done in Gaza over the last year … Generations of Israelis will have to explain to their children and grandchildren why we behaved that way. Some will have to explain why they didn’t refuse to bomb. And some will have to explain why they didn’t do more to stop the horror.”

Webinar – Defence for Children International
A Year of Lost Childhood in Gaza
11.07.2024
On World Children’s Day, join Defense for Children International - Palestine for "A Year of Lost Childhood," an urgent event amplifying the voices of Palestinian children in Gaza who face a daily struggle for survival. As Israel’s genocidal campaign against Palestinian children continues to deny them the basic rights to life, education, health, and safety, these young witnesses will share their realities—grieving the loss of loved ones, navigating the trauma of violence, and enduring the deprivation of critical resources. This event sheds light on the brutal impacts of Israel's policies and the relentless violations that strip children of their most fundamental rights.
This event is a call to global action. DCIP will outline ways to mobilize against the genocide facing Palestinian children, urging attendees to advocate for an arms embargo, demand accountability for perpetrators, and challenge the systemic abuses that perpetuate these crimes. Join us in standing with Palestinian children and taking concrete steps to end these injustices.
The webinar will take place on Zoom on November 20 at 12 p.m. Eastern / 9 a.m. Pacific / 5 p.m. GMT / 7 p.m. Palestine time.

All the details you need to join the letter-writing campaign are on our website here
2. Have you sent a letter of complaint to your local supermarket about selling Obela Hommus and other products yet?
Sample letter of complaint to your local supermarket
Kia ora,
I am asking you to withdraw Obela Hommus and other Obela products from your shelves because it is supporting the genocide in Gaza. Obela is owned by the Strauss Group in Israel which helps finance and provides “care packages” for Israeli troops involved in genocide in Gaza.
It is unacceptable to have such a product in the store, particularly as the International Court of Justice ruled last month that Israel’s occupation of Palestine is unlawful and that all countries should end any “aid or assistance” to Israel to maintain its illegal occupation.
Selling Israeli products in New Zealand supermarkets is assisting the Israeli economy enabling the occupation to continue.
Please stop selling this product which assists genocide and assists Israel to continue its occupation of in Palestine.
Please get back to me urgently.

We will need some serious money to make our campaign as effective as possible. For example, we will need somewhere in the vicinity of $25,000 to bring speakers to New Zealand over the next year and organise large public meetings to help spread the message.
You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)
