Newsletter No 161
The north of Gaza is an open graveyard
“As the world watches, Palestinians in Gaza are living through a deliberately engineered humanitarian catastrophe of epic proportions that worsens by the hour. In recent weeks, Israel has imposed a total siege of northern Gaza and intensified its bombardment here, with reports that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is implementing a policy of starvation to force the remaining Palestinians south. Israel has already laid waste to much of Gaza, but if the international community does not act immediately, there will be nothing and no one remaining in the north.
The past year has tested our endurance in ways we could never have imagined. But the last few weeks have pushed us to the limit of anything that can be described as “living.””
The full piece, by 28-year-old doctor in northern Gaza, Dr. Ezzideen Shehab, is here. (Ezzidean was raised in Jabaliya, where he is currently sheltering)
NZ the staunchest western supporter of Israel – the silence of the complicit
The Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa says it is appalling that the government has remained totally silent on Israeli military and diplomatic attacks on the United Nations.
PSNA Chair, John Minto, says the Israel parliament decision this week to ban UNRWA operations in Israel and East Jerusalem effectively closes down the major aid organisation’s desperately needed work in the Gaza Strip.
“UNRWA was set up by the United Nations to assist the hundreds of thousands Palestinian refugees expelled by Israel in 1948, pending their right of return – which Israel refuses to recognise.”
“Israel sees UNRWA as an unwelcome reminder of Palestinian national rights and has always aimed to get rid of it. Support for banning UNRWA came from the Zionist New Zealand Jewish Council earlier this year.”
Israel has also recently shelled United Nations peacekeeping positions in Lebanon and has killed an estimated 230 UNRWA workers in Gaza.
“Our government has previously stated how important UNRWA relief work is for Palestinian refugees in Gaza. The US government says the UNRWA supply of food, water and medicine is ‘irreplaceable’”.
“Yet, under no doubt as a result of Israeli lobbying, our commitment to the UN and its work is increasingly exposed as somewhere between shallow and non-existent.”
John Minto says other western governments have been critical of the UNRWA ban and the recent Israeli refusal to allow the UN secretary general Antonio Guterres to enter Israel.
Despite New Zealand having UN peace keepers in the Lebanon border areas, it failed to join the more than 40 countries which condemned the military attacks on a number of UNIFIL bases in south Lebanon last month”.
“Our government refuses to offend Israel in any way. Even major arms suppliers to Israel, particularly the US, France and the UK, have been sometimes critical of what is a genocide by Israel in Gaza.”
“In contrast, the New Zealand government blames Hamas for all the killing and destruction committed by Israel, though it also finds space to condemn Hezbollah, the Houthis and Iran.”
Previous New Zealand governments have formally rebuked Israel for its violence, most recently former Foreign Minister Murry McCully in 2010 and former Prime Minister John Key in 2014, both by summoning in the Israeli ambassador.
“This time, when Israeli attacks on Gaza are becoming even more savage and sadistic by the day, our Foreign Minister and his government remains inactive and silent.”
John Minto says the Israeli war crimes in Gaza now clearly include ethnic cleansing.
“Reports of what is called the Israeli ‘General’s Plan’ are now widespread in our news media. The General’s Plan is a vile combination of military assault, starvation and exclusion of both aid workers and news media, to hide and facilitate the ‘death march’ of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from north of the Netzarim Corridor”.
“This is to prepare for a resumption of illegal Israeli colonisation in northern Gaza.”
“In September, our government voted with 123 other countries for a UN General Assembly resolution to demand that Israel withdraw from the Occupied Palestinian Territories without delay.”
“That was welcome.”
“What is not welcome is for New Zealand to then stand by when genocidal Israel carries out ethnic cleansing on a massive scale to once again spit on the UN and increase its occupation of Palestinian lands.”
Quote of the week relating to Israel’s decision to outlaw the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Words Agency)
“This decision will turn a humanitarian catastrophe into a humanitarian ‘apocalypse”.
I use that word advisedly, as I believe we are seeing Gaza transformed on live TV into an industrial scale death camp.”
—Chris Gunness, former UNRWA spokesperson

Please read the following three quotes:
1) Greg Gunness, former UNRWA spokesperson
“This decision (Israel’s decision to outlaw UNRWA) will turn a humanitarian catastrophe into a humanitarian ‘apocalypse”.
I use that word advisedly, as I believe we are seeing Gaza transformed on live TV
into an industrial scale death camp.”
2) Francesca Albanese, UN special rapporteur for human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories
"The violence that Israel has unleashed against the Palestinians post-7 October is not happening in a vacuum, but is part of a long-term intentional, systematic, state-organised forced displacement and replacement of the Palestinians"
3) 28-year-old doctor in northern Gaza, Dr Ezzideen Shehab.
“The north of Gaza is an open graveyard. As the world watches, Palestinians in Gaza are living through a deliberately engineered humanitarian catastrophe of epic proportions that worsens by the hour.
What should be parliament’s response while our government is silent while the settler colonial state of Israel runs riot across the Middle East in an orgy of industrial-scale slaughter?

Don’t Bank on Apartheid
Right now, ASB KiwiSaver funds have over $14 million invested in Motorola Solutions Inc. who are part of a United Nations list of 116 companies enabling illegal Israeli settlements.4 They are the technology and surveillance arm of the Israeli military and have custom built technologies for this occupying force. Their technology is used in illegal settlements, checkpoints, in the illegal “separation barrier” and by the military.5 Due to the recent ruling at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) there is now also a legal case that we should not be doing business with companies like Motorola.
We are asking ASB to make a choice: divest its KiwiSaver funds from Motorola Solutions Inc. or watch your customers switch en masse on November 29th, Day of Solidarity with Palestinians.
Whether or not you have a Kiwisaver with ASB.
Hīkoi mō Te Tiriti o Waitangi
In mid-November, the country will join in kotahitanga (unity) to hīkoi across the motu, and meet in Te Upoko o te Ika to send a clear message: Toitū Te Tiriti. The immediate call will be to stop the Treaty Principles Bill, and the raft of anti-Te Tiriti legislation that undermines our shared relationship.
Toitū Te Tiriti is coordinating the Hīkoi across the motu. We recommend following their facebook and/or instagram pages for up-to-date information. Please would you share the information below through your networks?
The information below all comes from Toitū Te Tiriti.
Hīkoi mō Te Tiriti will consist of three types of activities:
Hīkoi: moving on foot at main rally points
Convoy: by vehicle from one destination to another
Activations: rallying together to make noise, whakawhanaungatanga and kōrero
Health & Safety
The health and safety of ALL people over the course of this hīkoi is a priority. There will be safety marshalls along the way, and we expect everyone to ensure safety on the road and in vehicles is maintained to the highest standard. This includes safe and calm behaviour.
Please ensure you have prepared enough kai and wai to sustain your whānau for the duration of the Hīkoi. Please also ensure you prepare for all weather scenarios: warm clothing, wet weather gear, hats and sunblock.
There is an expectation that everyone priorities the safety, care and needs of our kaumātua and our tamariki. Please look out for them. Write your name and phone number on your tamariki hands in the event they decide to take off for a play and can’t find you.
Marae for each evening of the hīkoi has been booked. Priority will be given to kaumātua, tamariki and Māmā. We encourage everyone to make their own arrangements for accommodation if the marae becomes too full.
Please ensure that you have enough pūtea to support yourself and your whānau on the road (gas and kai money). We know these are tough times for our whānau, so please do not put yourself under too much pressure. Also have a plan to get home after!

Invitation from International League of People’s Struggle to an ILPS assembly on November 15-17
Already several people from PSNA are attending this event and it would be good if more can come. Here is the letter of invite we received.
Kia ora,
Warm greetings of solidarity!
We are honoured to invite PSNA to the first in-person assembly of the International League of Peoples' Struggle (ILPS) Aotearoa, where movements, organisations, and alliances committed to unity, cooperation, and coordination in anti-imperialist and democratic struggles will come together.
The assembly will take place from 2 pm on November 15 to 3 pm on November 17, 2024, at the Willowhaven Holiday Park in Rotorua.
This gathering is especially urgent in the face of global crises, including the worsening genocide in Palestine. As the resistance to imperialism grows, the need to strengthen our collective resolve has never been more critical. Together, we aim to build new alliances and fortify existing ones, ensuring that our global fight against imperialism and all forms of oppression remains steadfast and resolute.
Your participation in this assembly is vital, and we warmly welcome the powerful insights and contributions your organization will bring. Let us unite in solidarity to stand against imperialism and support the struggles of oppressed peoples worldwide.
For registration and more details of the conference please email ilps.nz@proton.me

2. Have you sent a letter of complaint to your local supermarket about selling Obela Hommus and other products yet?
Sample letter of complaint to your local supermarket
Kia ora,
I am asking you to withdraw Obela Hommus and other Obela products from your shelves because it is supporting the genocide in Gaza. Obela is owned by the Strauss Group in Israel which helps finance and provides “care packages” for Israeli troops involved in genocide in Gaza.
It is unacceptable to have such a product in the store, particularly as the International Court of Justice ruled last month that Israel’s occupation of Palestine is unlawful and that all countries should end any “aid or assistance” to Israel to maintain its illegal occupation.
Selling Israeli products in New Zealand supermarkets is assisting the Israeli economy enabling the occupation to continue.
Please stop selling this product which assists genocide and assists Israel to continue its occupation of in Palestine.
Please get back to me urgently.

We will need some serious money to make our campaign as effective as possible. For example, we will need somewhere in the vicinity of $25,000 to bring speakers to New Zealand over the next year and organise large public meetings to help spread the message.
You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)
