STOP PRESS:
A very warm congratulations to Christchurch City Council
We have been delighted at the big positive reaction here in Aotearoa and across the world to the Christchurch City Council vote last Wednesday to refuse to procure goods or services from companies involved in illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.
(It’s important to say here that Environment Canterbury took this step in March this year as the first local body in Aotearoa New Zealand to sanction Israel when the motion was moved by ECAN councillor Greg Byrnes)
Reports from the Christchurch City Council meeting which became the first New Zealand city to sanction Israel appeared in the Christchurch Press here on The Daily Blog here, in Asia-Pacific report here and from Mick Hall here
Messages of support and congratulations have flooded in on social media
Many people here and around the world have asked how they can get their city to take the same action so this Sunday 3 November at 8pm we will be holding a webinar to take people through the simple steps needed to get their local council to support this policy. Contact our secretary Neil Scott (secretary@PSNA.nz) if you would like to be on the seminar for your city.
We are also working with the international BDS committee to offer a similar seminar for cities around the world.

Christchurch City Council leads – Luxon government must follow
Following the principled decision of the Christchurch City Council this week to change its procurement policy to exclude companies involved in illegal Israeli settlements, we are asking the government to take similar steps in line with United Nations resolutions and international law to sanction Israel.
In particular we are asking you, in light of UN Security Council resolution 2334 (which was co-sponsored by a National-led government) and the recent International Court of Justice advisory ruling that Israel’s occupation of Palestine is illegal, to take the following practical steps to sanction Israel:
Ban all imports into Aotearoa New Zealand from illegal Israeli settlements
End government procurement of goods and services from companies identified by the UN as complicit in the building and maintaining of illegal Israeli settlements
Direct the Superfund, ACC and Kiwisaver providers to end investments in the companies involved in illegal Israeli settlements
The Christchurch City Council has shown the way. We are urging your government to follow suit rapidly.
The time for pious words is well gone – there is only time for practical action as we propose here.

Christchurch City Council decision: “We hope others will follow their example” Labour
24 October 2024
Labour backs Christchurch City Council sanctions on Israel
Labour is backing Christchurch City Council’s decision not to do business with firms involved in Israel’s illegal settlements in the Occupied Territories.
“It is great that Christchurch is the first council in New Zealand to take up this cause. We hope others will follow this example,” Labour’s associate foreign affairs spokesperson Phil Twyford said.
“Christchurch City’s decision is in line with the recent International Court of Justice ruling on the illegal settlements, which said the international community should not ‘aid or assist’ the settlements.
“Labour has called on the Government to direct the Super Fund and ACC to divest from any companies on the United Nations list of companies complicit in building or maintaining the illegal settlements, and use its procurement rules to ban any future dealings with those firms.
“New Zealanders want to see an end to Israel’s slaughter in Gaza, and a political solution that allows the establishment of a Palestinian state.
“Unfortunately, since the Oslo Accords in 1993, Israel has deliberately set out to colonise the Occupied West Bank with settlements housing more than 700,000 Israelis, designed to scuttle any hope of a two-state solution.
“It is time for the international community to take action against this breach of international law,” Phil Twyford said.

Powerful links between Taranaki and Palestine expressed at petition presentation
On Friday (25 October) supporters of Palestinian Solidarity Taranaki presented a petition calling for New Plymouth District Council to pass a resolution recognising and acting upon the crisis in Gaza. This includes calls for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and adjustments in council’s procurement policy to end economic interaction with illegal Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT)
The paper petition, consisted of 1800+ signatures, as well as letters signed by organizations and businesses including three iwi, Taranaki Cathedral and Taranaki Muslim Association among others. The petition was carried in an emotional procession from Pukekura Park as supporters sang Hine e Hine and held Palestinian flags and posters of children killed in Gaza.
On arrival at the entrance to NPDC building around 50 supporters gathered and were met by the deputy Mayor David Bublitz and councillors Bali Haque and Harry Duynhoven.
In his address Dr Ruakere Hond urged council to pay heed to the colonial violence and theft of land that had taken place in our own region, “ If anyone should know the devastation of violent oppression and genocidal intent it should be Taranaki. In Taranaki, of all places in New Zealand, we should be able to speak for the Palestinian people, to speak out and act against the crimes enacted against them."
Brother Peter Bray – significantly born and raised in Waitara – then spoke about his 15 years as Vice Chancellor of Bethlehem University in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. He talked about the effect on his students over the years and the difficulty for everyone living under occupation. He intended to report back to Bethlehem the support he had witnessed in New Plymouth for the people of Gaza.
Kate Cole, organiser of Palestinian Solidarity Taranaki, said “If our government fails to speak out against Israel's war crimes and crimes against humanity then our local government must remind them that a small nation like ours depends on international law and urgently needs to make a strong stand for these things wherever they occur”
"We are asking our council to join two other councils who have passed similar motions and to follow the lead of Christchurch City Council's historic motion this week that ends all economic involvement with the illegal settlements."
Petition organiser Grant Cole asked “Whenever a population is at risk through genocide or crimes against humanity, those people turn to the world for help. Are we not part of that world here in New Plymouth?"
The petition was handed over to the Deputy Mayor by Tahseen Othman, a Palestinian local resident who has family in the West Bank. Tahseen and his family have come to our weekly rallies for the last 12 months. In his words to the deputy mayor he made it clear that our petition was about acting on humanitarian values.
“We have given New Plymouth City Council the impetus and direction to follow Christchurch City Council's lead. Calls for a ceasefire or expressions of concern are not enough on their own. Words have to be backed up with action, and small as it is, the exclusion of business conducted with the occupation is just that, it works as a symbol and as a sanction when the central government won’t act.
Apart from the moral imperative, there is also the hard and fast legal responsibilities set out in UN Resolution 2334 (co-sponsored by NZ) and the recent General assembly resolution adopted this September”, concluded Kate.
The deputy mayor accepted the petition and it is now a waiting game before a motion can be placed on the agenda for the next council meeting on November 5.

Invitation from International League of People’s Struggle to an ILPS assembly on November 15-17
Already several people from PSNA are attending this event and it would be good if more can come. Here is the letter of invite we received.
Kia ora,
Warm greetings of solidarity!
We are honoured to invite PSNA to the first in-person assembly of the International League of Peoples' Struggle (ILPS) Aotearoa, where movements, organisations, and alliances committed to unity, cooperation, and coordination in anti-imperialist and democratic struggles will come together.
The assembly will take place from 2 pm on November 15 to 3 pm on November 17, 2024, at the Willowhaven Holiday Park in Rotorua.
This gathering is especially urgent in the face of global crises, including the worsening genocide in Palestine. As the resistance to imperialism grows, the need to strengthen our collective resolve has never been more critical. Together, we aim to build new alliances and fortify existing ones, ensuring that our global fight against imperialism and all forms of oppression remains steadfast and resolute.
Your participation in this assembly is vital, and we warmly welcome the powerful insights and contributions your organization will bring. Let us unite in solidarity to stand against imperialism and support the struggles of oppressed peoples worldwide.

Don’t Bank on Apartheid
Right now, ASB KiwiSaver funds have over $14 million invested in Motorola Solutions Inc. who are part of a United Nations list of 116 companies enabling illegal Israeli settlements.4 They are the technology and surveillance arm of the Israeli military and have custom built technologies for this occupying force. Their technology is used in illegal settlements, checkpoints, in the illegal “separation barrier” and by the military.5 Due to the recent ruling at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) there is now also a legal case that we should not be doing business with companies like Motorola.
We are asking ASB to make a choice: divest its KiwiSaver funds from Motorola Solutions Inc. or watch your customers switch en masse on November 29th, Day of Solidarity with Palestinians.
Whether or not you have a Kiwisaver with ASB.

2. Have you sent a letter of complaint to your local supermarket about selling Obela Hommus and other products yet?
Sample letter of complaint to your local supermarket
Kia ora,
I am asking you to withdraw Obela Hommus and other Obela products from your shelves because it is supporting the genocide in Gaza. Obela is owned by the Strauss Group in Israel which helps finance and provides “care packages” for Israeli troops involved in genocide in Gaza.
It is unacceptable to have such a product in the store, particularly as the International Court of Justice ruled last month that Israel’s occupation of Palestine is unlawful and that all countries should end any “aid or assistance” to Israel to maintain its illegal occupation.
Selling Israeli products in New Zealand supermarkets is assisting the Israeli economy enabling the occupation to continue.
Please stop selling this product which assists genocide and assists Israel to continue its occupation of in Palestine.
Please get back to me urgently.

You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)
