Newsletter No 149

Kia ora koutou,

Targeting Israeli genocide and apartheid – take action against Obela Hommus…

This month we are targeting Obela Hommus to drive it off the shelves of our supermarkets across the country. Please note PSNA has written to our two big supermarket chains asking them to withdraw Obela products but they have not responded.

What can you do to help?

  1. Make a formal complaint to your local supermarket about them stocking a product which proudly supports and helps fund the Israeli military as it conducts genocide against Palestinians. More details are here and on the leaflet below. Some supermarkets such as Foodstuffs outlets (New World, Pak ‘n Save, Four Square) have a formal complaint process, for their customers, which they take seriously. You can get more details here. Otherwise you can make a complaint in person at the supermarket - and request a response from management.

  2. Work with your local Palestine solidarity group to distribute our leaflet – see copy below – and help spread community awareness of the international campaign to boycott Obela and get it off our supermarket shelves.

  3. Boycott Obela stickers will shortly be on their way to solidarity groups around the country…

  4. Take Obela products for a walk around your supermarket and drop them off in various places…

This is the campaign leaflet we will be using:

What else are we asking people to boycott and pressure retailers to withdraw from sale?

Our key BDS targets are:

  • Obela Hommus:

Obela is 50% owned by Israel’s largest food company, Strauss Group, which is known for its support of the Israeli military, namely the elite Golani and Givati infantry brigades, whom they fund and provide care packages for. Since 1948, the Golani and Givati Brigades have been notorious for their severe human rights abuses in Lebanon and Palestine. Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on a team of fighters from the Golani Brigade committing hate crimes against Palestinians in Nablus in the occupied Palestinian territories. Former members of the Golani Brigade describe the use of the "neighbour procedure", a term for the use of Palestinian civilians, often children, as human shields to protect Israeli occupation soldiers. The procedure was ruled illegal by Israel's own high court in 2005.

  • AHAVA products:

(“Dead Sea Mineral Skin Care Products”) Ahava manufactures its cosmetics in a factory in the illegal Mitzpe Shalem settlement in the occupied West Bank. However, AHAVA labels its skin care products imported into the EU as originating from "The Dead Sea, Israel." AHAVA uses Palestinian natural resources without the permission of or compensation to the Palestinians. Meanwhile, Israel denies Palestinians access to the shores of the Dead Sea and its resources, although one-third of the western shore of the Dead Sea lies in the occupied West Bank.

  • SodaStream:

Soda Steam is actively complicit in Israel's policy of displacing the indigenous Bedouin-Palestinian citizens of Israel in the Naqab (Negev). SodaStream have a long history of mistreatment of and discrimination against Palestinian workers.

  • HP (Hewlett-Packard):

HP-branded corporations provide and operate technology that Israel uses to maintain its system of apartheid, occupation and settler colonialism over the Palestinian people.

Aside from providing services and technology to the Israeli army and police that maintain Israel’s illegal occupation and siege of Gaza, HP provides Israel’s Population and Immigration Authority with the exclusive itanium servers for its Aviv System. This system enables the government to control and enforce its system of racial segregation and apartheid against Palestinian citizens of Israel and is directly involved in Israel’s settler colonialism through its “Yesha database”, which compiles information on Israeli citizens in illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian West Bank.

  • BP and Caltex:

Both brands are involved in extracting petroleum products from the Eastern Mediterranean, within Palestine’s maritime boundary, for Israel’s benefit at the expense of Palestinians. Stealing from the occupied people of Palestine is a breach of international law.

  • McDonald’s:

McDonald’s franchises in Israel have been openly supporting the Israeli Defence Force’s genocide in Gaza with free meals for Israeli soldiers. McDonald’s International have been happy for their brand to be associated with the slaughter of Palestinians. Active boycotts of McDonald’s in different countries have already hit their sales and some franchises in the Islamic world are now flying the Palestinian flag to distance themselves from the Israeli franchise. This adds to the pressure on McDonald’s to close its Israeli restaurants.

Remember - Swim with Gaza – August 24th/25th

Yes we know it’s winter BUT….

Last year several PSNA groups joined the Swim with Gaza (in their summer – our winter!) We received this message last week to say:

We hope you can join us in this year’s Swim With Gaza.

We had a very successful Swim last year in over 40 location around the world, but this year could not be more different in Gaza.

We debated whether we should go ahead with this year’s swim. We were moved by the fact that even in these darkest of times, people in Gaza are finding joy any which way they can – dancing, singing, playing music and more.

Our Swim With Gaza this year is to keep faith with the people of Gaza, that things can and will get better and we are with them in good and bad times.

Would you be able to organise a swim in your area?

Have a look here and leave your details if you would like to join this year’s Swim With Gaza.

Is Labour slowly getting warmed on Palestine?…from the general debate in Parliament last week

Hon PHIL TWYFORD (Labour—Te Atatū): Today, the Labour Party has called on the Government to use its Government procurement rules to ban Government agencies from purchasing goods and services from Israel's illegal settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and we are also asking the Government to communicate directly to the Government of Israel that it should act immediately on the ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and withdraw from the occupied territories now.

Why this; why now? Because the International Court of Justice, the United Nation's highest legal body has handed down an advisory opinion that is a sweeping and damning indictment of Israel's occupation of East Jerusalem, Gaza, and the West Bank, which it acquired by force in 1967 and has held ever since. It's worth a look at what the ICJ ruling actually says, and I want to quote directly: "The sustained abuse by Israel of its position as an occupying Power, through annexation and an assertion of permanent control over the Occupied Palestinian Territory and continued frustration of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, violates fundamental principles of international law and renders Israel's presence in the Occupied … Territory unlawful."

The ICJ goes on to catalogue forced evictions, extensive house demolitions, restrictions on residents and movement, the transfer by Israel of 700,000 settlers into the illegal settlements, its failure to prevent or punish violent attacks by settlers on Palestinians, restricting the access of the Palestinian population to water. But here's the important thing for this House: the ICJ found that all States, including New Zealand, are under an obligation not to recognise as legal the situation arising from the unlawful presence of Israel in the occupied territories and not to render aid or assistance to that occupation.

The ICJ ruling has changed the game. The world has watched in horror over the last eight months as Israel has killed nearly 40,000 civilians in Gaza, in spite of repeated calls by the United Nations General Assembly for a permanent ceasefire. Now the UN's highest court has issued a damning indictment of Israel's illegal occupation. Governments, like New Zealand, have a duty to act and this builds on a range of initiatives and policies that successive New Zealand Governments have held on this issue, and I want to reference when Murray McCully was the foreign Minister of the National Government of the time, in 2016, New Zealand then held a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council and co-sponsored a resolution that was passed in the Security Council that condemned Israel's illegal settlements and called on governments—with the force of international law—to differentiate between Israel the State, and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. I note that some members, some Ministers in this Government disown that resolution now and publicly have differed with it.

I also want to point out that our Government, in recent days, has called on the Government of New Zealand to recognise Palestine, to give it diplomatic recognition, just as Ireland has done in recent days, just as Spain and Norway have done—144 other countries in the United Nations have recognised Palestine, as a way of signalling the need for a negotiated political settlement in the region.

Finally, I want to say that the ICJ ruling is not a suggestion; it's not a request. It is international law and this Government likes to talk a big game on the international rules - based order, but it has been strangely quiet on Israel's war crimes and its multiple breaches of international law going back decades. If this Government doesn't speak out on this question that the ICJ has ruled on, if it doesn't take the kind of practical actions that we are calling for today—at least in the beginning, a ban on Government procurement of goods and services produced in the illegal settlements—then this Government is inviting people to accuse it of being selective, inconsistent, and hypocritical and undermining New Zealand's standing in the world.

Petition to the Aotearoa New Zealand parliament

“That the House of Representatives urge the Government to impose sanctions on Israel (including sanctions on settlers in the West Bank) until Israel has withdrawn from all Palestinian territory and it has reverted to the borders established for Israel under the UN Mandate of 1947 (Resolution 181)”

You can sign the petition here (note this is not a PSNA petition)

“Educators for Palestine”, seeking your help

We included this message in the previous newsletter but are including it again because it’s an important initiative:

“Educators for Palestine”, standing together for the right of young Palestinians to life and education, are asking for PSNA supporters and groups around the motu to not only sign this open letter but to promote it at rallies and events.

We are keen that at the nationwide events supporters are encouraged to ask the vast and varied kinds of educators in our whanau, communities and associated organisations to go on line and sign this Open Letter, as Educators are everywhere. (Below read more about Educators for Palestine along with the state of education under bombardment in Gaza which has been described as being ’scholastacide.’).

https://our.actionstation.org.nz/petitions/educators-for-palestine

The open letter says:

We, the undersigned educators, call on the New Zealand government to:

  • Use diplomatic means to push for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and an end to the 17-year blockade of Gaza.

  • Increase funding and support to agencies which run schools in Gaza, including but not limited to UNRWA (UN Relief and Works Agency), which runs 40% of Gaza’s schools.

  • Condemn the deliberate and targeted bombing of schools and education infrastructure in Gaza as an attack on Palestinian children and society.

“NO OTHER LAND” – A Palestinian film showing at the New Zealand International Film Festival

Directed by Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham, Rachel Szor

"Produced by a Palestinian-Israeli collective, this is a film poised to meet a world changed by events that have unfolded since it wrapped production in October 2023. No Other Land documents a Palestinian village and its residents as they struggle against forced displacement. The West Bank’s Masafer Yatta faces mass evictions at hands of Israeli authorities. Yet this is as much a story of its own co-directors’ asymmetrical relationship, as it is an account of events in Masafer Yatta. The result is a masterful exploration of 21st century apartheid and colonisation." — Nadia Abu-Shanab

Looking out for government MPs

“Pitiful in the face of genocide” – yes that’s our government. It still hasn’t even reached first base in responding to the industrial scale slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza. First base would be to condemn Israel and call for an immediate permanent ceasefire.

We need to challenge government MPs in National, New Zealand First and Act.

If you come across information with details of where any of these MPs will be for speaking or have meeting engagements, then please contact us urgently so we can organise to protest and challenge them.

Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign?

We will need some serious money to make our campaign as effective as possible. For example, we will need somewhere in the vicinity of $25,000 to bring speakers to New Zealand over the next year and organise large public meetings to help spread the message.

You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)

In Occupied Palestine daily newsletter – an invitation to subscribe from Leslie Bravery

Because of mainstream news media complicity, daily headlines and commentary only occasionally ever mention the relentless Israeli violence in Palestine, not even the frequent air strikes!

However, daily news and statistics regarding the violence Palestinians are forced to live under are regularly reported on in the “In Occupied Palestine daily newsletter”, sourced and compiled for easy reading and correlation chiefly from the Palestinian Monitoring Group's daily situation reports.

The In Occupied Palestine daily newsletter continues to be circulated, by email, worldwide to subscribers only, as it has been over the last two decades.
