Palestinian Children’s day

The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian Child is observed on April 5th each year, highlighting the plight and rights of Palestinian children, and calling for an end to the Israeli military occupation and a focus on their well-being.

Purpose:
The day serves as a platform to raise awareness about the challenges faced by Palestinian children, including the impact of the conflict and occupation on their lives and rights.

Key Issues:
The focus is on the rights to life, survival, development, health, water, food, and medicine, which are often jeopardized by the ongoing situation.

Actions:
Organizations like Defence for Children International (DCI) and others use this day to launch campaigns, host webinars, and organize events to advocate for the rights of Palestinian children.

History:
The late President Yasser Arafat declared April 5th as a day for the Palestinian child, emphasizing the commitment to the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

United Nations:
The United Nations Division for Palestinian Rights plays a key role in promoting the day and organizing events, including photo exhibits and film screenings.

Beach Babylon shouts coffee to Falastin Tea Collective

Free coffee for protesters is an indication that there is a growing and widespread public anger at Israel’s genocide in Gaza and increasing support for the Palestinian struggle against it.

The Wellington Falastin Tea Collective has begun the habit of a post-protest coffee near wherever it has had its Saturday protest.  The most recent action was at Point Jerningham out along Oriental Bay.

We turned up at Beach Babylon cafe.  One of our group had recommended it.  There were about 20 of us.

Halfway through putting in our orders, there was a message from the management.

“Coffees are free for you guys.  Let’s do this to show our support for what you are doing.”

We really appreciated the coffee and the political signal.

If you live in, or are visiting, Whanganui a Tara, drop in and patronise them.  It’s not easy in hospo these days and giving them your custom is a nice reciprocal gesture.

Message to shareholders

Our BDS movement is building for a campaign to remove SodaStream from retail shelves.

SodaStream used to operate out of the Occupied West Bank.  International political pressure forced them to shift to Bedu land in the Negeb in the south of Israel.

In their new location SodaStream exploits the impoverished and disposed Palestinians in the region to make their carbonated water machines to export to the world.

If you have shares, or know staff in; Briscoes, Farmers, Harvey Norman, The Warehouse, Mitre 10, PB Tech, JB Hi-Fi, Woolworths, 100% Home, Kmart or Ballantynes, then we would love to hear from you.

Please email SodaStream@PSNA.nz to go on a confidential list.

More details of the campaign are out soon.

TVNZ rejects PSNA complaint

TVNZ has rejected another complaint from PSNA about its coverage of the Israeli genocide in Gaza.

PSNA complained that a report on 16 March failed to explain why Ansar Allah (aka the Houthi Rebels) were again attacking Israeli connected shipping in the Red Sea – that is, Israel had just resumed denying humanitarian supplies into Gaza.

We complained that if the report had been of a western country the reasons would have been spelt out in detail.

TVNZ replied with a list of previous reports where its 1News had given the reasons why Ansar Allah had targeted ships going to and from Israel.

We have to concede that it has been a number of times.

But a closer look at the content of these previous reports reveals a deeper bias than simply ignoring the Ansar Allah motives.

The reasons for choosing to broadcast these stories appears to be to mock and criticise Ansar Allah for ‘vowing revenge’, attacking US ships when they say they are targeting Israeli vessels only, and mistakenly targeting ‘vessels that had little or no link’ to the Israeli attacks on Gaza.

Preserved Identity at Eden Park on Eid Day

Mariam and Ali at Eid Day at Eden Park

Preserved Identity is an Aotearoa based Palestinian run Social Enterprise that ethically sources goods from Palestinians and makes them available for purchasing online. https://preservedidentity.com/shop-products/

Mission:

“To promote conscious and positive buying through bringing unique Palestinian products to the global platform and in return helping the Palestinian people socially by preserving their identity, culture, heritage and traditions, as well as economically by creating work and donating meals to the children of Gaza.”

They ship from Tamaki and allow pickups too. Their business model runs with:

  • a third of funds going to the producers and makers

  • a third as donations to Gaza

  • and a third going back into the social enterprise to keep it going so that the people of Aotearoa and Australia can continue to access authentic Palestinian goods.

The two charities Preserved Identity work with are:

  • Kiwi Trust for Palestinian Children Relief – a charity that sends donations to families in Gaza, Palestine and provides children with meals for every order* made on Preserved Identity.

  • Convoys of Good – a non-profit charitable and licensed organisation. The association emerged from a team, who are well known for providing emergency relief services in the reconstruction and repair of the homes of poor and needy families in the Gaza Strip.

If you want a kufiya, or any of a number of other Palestinian items that you can't find at the rallies, please give them a visit.

Are we still discussing if Israeli Apartheid exists in Palestine. . .

Last week was Israel Apartheid week as called for by the Palestinian driven BDS Movement. Towns and cities in countries all over the world carried out Anti Apartheid actions.

Yet - Israel, and it’s supporters around the world, keep on denying that Israeli Apartheid exists.

This questions has been asked and answered for decades.

In 1975, the UN passed a resolution stating that Israel is an Apartheid state. Pressure made the UN rescind that resolution because of pressure from Israleri Apartheid deniers.

Since then there have been dozens of reports outlining Israeli Apartheid. Here are some of the relevant report and articles since 2002.

1.       2002 – Anglican Communion News Service - Apartheid in the Holy Land

2.       2002 - UNGA 4th Committee - Israeli practices in occupied Palestinian territories, form of Apartheid fourth committee told

3.       2006 - President Carter – Book - Peace not Apartheid

4.      2009 - Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa - Occupation, colonialism, Apartheid?: a re-assessment of Israel's practices in the occupied Palestinian territories under international law

5.       2012 - Russell Tribunal on Palestine - Palestine and the Question of Apartheid

6.       2020 – Yesh Din - The Occupation of the West Bank and the Crime of Apartheid: Legal Opinion

7.       2021 - B'Tselem - A regime of Jewish supremacy from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea: This is Apartheid

8.       2021 - Human Rights Watch - A Threshold Crossed - Israeli Authorities and the Crimes of Apartheid and Persecution

9.       2022 - Kairos Palestine - Kairos Palestine welcomes Amnesty International Report: “Israel’s Apartheid Against Palestinians: Cruel System of Domination and Crime Against Humanity”

10.   2022 – Amnesty International - Israel's Apartheid Against Palestinians - Cruel System of Domination and Crime Against Humanity

11.   2022 - Al-Haq, Addameer, Habitat International Coalition - Entrenching and Maintaining an Apartheid Regime over the Palestinian People as a Whole

12.   2022 – Harvard Law School & Addameer - Apartheid in the Occupied West Bank: A Legal Analysis of Israel’s Actions

13.   2022 – United Nations Human Rights Council – 49th Session - Report of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967 – Detailed Israeli Apartheid

14.   2025 – United National International Court of Justice - Legal Consequences arising from the Policies and Practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem

Keep this email on file and send it to anyone who questions whether Israel is practicing Apartheid.

Just Six Government MPs Needed To Pass “Unlawful Occupation Of Palestine” Sanctions Bill

As we reported last week the Green Party bill calling for sanctions on Israel has gained support from Te Pāti Māori and Labour and needs support from just six government MPs for it to pass when introduced into parliament. The details are here.

The Green Party are looking for at least six government MPs to support the bill, which will give a majority in parliament, and we are calling on supporters around the country to book in meetings with their local MPs – either list or electorate MPs – to ask them to support the bill and support a conscience vote on the bill. A conscience vote means an MP would be free to support sanctions against Israel even if their party as a whole won’t support the bill. You can find your closest government MP here.

We can provide additional information to help you present this to your local government MPs – either electorate or list MPs – to get the bill debated in parliament. If you’d like more information please contact secretary@PSNA.nz

We ask all our supporters to contact their closest government MPs and urge them to support the Green Party bill being debated in parliament.

Palestine exhibition

The Palestine Forum of New Zealand is organizing an exhibition at a venue in Auckland and are inviting the Palestinian community to lend items. Can you help?

Keep spreading the message about the Genocide Hotline!

Remember possible action for local groups

For groups affiliated to PSNA we suggest the following actions could be taken at any time in support of this campaign

  • Asking your local backpacker accommodation to display the poster and draw it to the attention of any Israeli soldiers here on “rest and recreation” from the genocide.

  • Pasting the hotline poster (use the version in this newsletter which includes a contact email) around the vicinity of backpacker venues in your local area. This is already happening in some areas.

  • Hand out flyers to people in the vicinity of your local backpackers

  • Contact us on the hotline if you come across Israeli soldiers

Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign?

We will need some serious money to make our campaign as effective as possible. For example, we will need somewhere in the vicinity of $25,000 to bring speakers to New Zealand over the next year and organise large public meetings to help spread the message.

You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)
