The stench of decaying morality hangs over our government
Open letter from PSNA to all MPs of the coalition government sent last week
With over 15 months of genocide in Gaza and nothing resembling effective sanctions on the Israeli regime there is a deepening indelible moral stain on the New Zealand government and on each and every MP who is part of it.
Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders) and United Nations officials have all condemned Israel for crimes of genocide and extermination in Gaza.
Within the last few days Israel has renewed attacks on Gaza’s hospitals as it tries to drive the entire Palestinian population from northern Gaza in a massive ethnic cleansing operation called the General’s plan.
The genocide, ethnic cleansing and war crimes taking place every day are obvious to all humanity. And they are obvious to each and every one of you.
Heaven knows how you will explain your silence in the face of genocide to your grandchildren.
The government’s past 15 months of silence cannot be erased from history but you can stand up, either alone or together, to speak out now.
You must help New Zealand to redeem itself and call for sanctions on Israel for genocide.
Please respond collectively or individually to this message without unnecessary delay.
Reminder PSNA national conference February 22/23 in Wellington

Palestinian Trade Unionism - webinar
Sunday, January 12th: 8PM Jerusalem, 7PM Berlin, 6PM London, 1PM NYC, 7am Monday 13th January in Aotearoa New Zealand
The Palestinian trade union movement has always played a central role in the Palestinian struggle for political sovereignty.
Trade unions were instrumental in mobilizing general strikes during the First Intifada, shaping Palestinian party politics into the present, and mobilizing workers to fight for dignity despite the conditions of occupation.
Mohammed Barakat is a senior partner in the Green Olive Collective and a second generation refugee whose family was expelled from their home outside Jerusalem in the Nakba. He is a witness to all the major political events of recent decades, including the Six Day War, the Intifadas, and the entrenchment of military rule in the West Bank.
Mohammed organized hotel and hospitality workers during the First Intifada as a member of the executive board of the Hotels and Restaurant Workers Trade Union and the executive committee of the Progressive Workers Union. He will speak with us from experience about the development of Palestinian labour politics since the 1980s and the larger context of Palestinian union organizing.

Quotes of the week
"As if the relentless bombing and the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza were not enough, the one sanctuary where Palestinians should have felt safe in fact became a death trap. The protection of hospitals during warfare is paramount and must be respected by all sides, at all times."
Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights
“Injustice makes the rules, and courage breaks them.”
Ursula K. Le Guin (1929-2018), an American science fiction
“Every native population in the world resists colonists as long as it has the slightest hope of being able to rid itself of the danger of being colonised. That is what the Arabs in Palestine are doing, and what they will persist in doing as long as there remains a solitary spark of hope that they will be able to prevent the transformation of “Palestine” into the “Land of Israel.”
Ze’ev Jabotinsky, the founder of Revisionist Zionism, spoke of this very colonial nature in his 1923 Iron Wall speech, comparing Palestinians to the Aztecs and Sioux – who had found themselves colonized by outside powers.

Three important submissions due in January
There are three important bills before parliament which need to be challenged – submissions for each one close in January. The Foreign Interference Bill has direct implications for groups raising funds for Palestinian organisations or supporting the Palestinian resistance to Israeli apartheid. PSNA will make a submission on this bill.
The Treaty Principles Bill is an attempt to halt decolonization here and to make it easier for foreign corporations to exploit this country and our resources. We are standing against Israel’s settler colonial regime in Palestine and to be consistent we must stand with tangata whenua here against colonialism as well.
We have likewise included the Regulatory Standards Bill because it has serious implications for decolonization here.
Today is the last day for submissions on Treaty Principles Bill – see PSNA submission later in newsletter
1. The Treaty Principles Bill – Submissions close Tuesday 7 January
This ACT Party Bill is designed to stop progress towards decolonisation of Aotearoa and carries huge risks of creating serious social divisions. Here are four sites which can help you write short submission. Submissions can be made here.
Emily Writes – clear, simple set of steps to follow & points to make.
ActionStation website - a good clear submission guide and their video with Carwyn Jones, Tina Ngata and Max Harris has points & tips.
Green Party submission guide – best to use the points for making your own submission rather than just signing the form.
The PSA has a good submission guide.
2. Regulatory Standards bill – Submissions close Monday 13 January
This is another ACT Party Bill which aims to make it much harder to roll back neo-liberal reforms brought in the 1980s and 1990s. It has failed three times before but ACT are pushing it forward again.
Emeritus Professor of Law Jane Kelsey has written a scathing critique of the Bill here which can help us make a short submission. Even just writing “I oppose this Bill” is enough for a submission but Jane’s piece might give you other ideas.
Submissions can be emailed toRSBconsultation@regulation.govt.nz or post it to Ministry for Regulation, PO Box 577, Wellington 6140.
3. Foreign Interference Bill – Submissions close Thursday 16 January
Maire Leadbeater has written a good piece pointing to the dangers of this bill
Even just writing “I oppose this Bill” is enough for a submission but Jane’s piece might give you other ideas.
Note this bill has serious implication for fundraising for Palestinian resistance groups.
You can make a submission here:
PSNA submission on Treaty Principles Bill
Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa is a network of 30+ autonomous groups around New Zealand who support human rights and self-determination for the Palestinian people. We are committed to building and strengthening campaigns for a free Palestine and to isolating the colonial, apartheid state of Israel through BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions)
Our aims include working in opposition to all forms of racism, including anti-Jewish prejudice and Islamophobia. This includes opposition to racism and colonialism here in Aotearoa New Zealand.
PSNA opposes the Treaty Principles Bill because we see it as a direct attack on Māori and the country’s founding document Te Tiriti o Waitangi. The Bill promotes a colonial view of the country where the majority culture dominates without respect for the rights or interests of the indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand. The Bill would render Te Tiriti – the founding basis for the state of Aotearoa New Zealand - a “legal nullity”.
The Treaty Principles Bill promotes a degraded democracy where “one-person, one-vote” is used to subject Māori to the “tyranny of the majority” where Māori representation, in local bodies for example, is decided at the whim of Pākeha voters rather than as of right by Māori voters.
Democracy means government of the people, by the people and for the people. The Treaty Principles Bill promotes the idea of government of the majority culture, by the majority culture for the majority culture. A mature, developed democracy brings groups in a numerical minority to the decision-making table. Te Tiriti itself demands this for the indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand.
We see the bill as a divisive, anti-democratic piece of legislation which is designed to split New Zealanders by pandering to resentful, lazy, red-neck racism amongst some Pākeha New Zealanders based on the distorted claim that Māori enjoy greater rights and privileges than other New Zealanders.
The Bill would end two generations of progress towards a decolonised Aotearoa New Zealand where Te Tiriti is honoured, participatory democracy flourishes, Māori language, culture and values are a source of national pride and kotahitanga (unity) based on common values benefits us all.
We urge the Select Committee to reject the bill outright.
PSNA Submission opposing the “Crimes (Countering Foreign Interference) Amendment Bill”
The Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa opposes this proposed legislation and urges the Select Committee to recommend it not proceed further.
We are opposed to the legislation because:
1. The legislation is not necessary. Existing law already criminalises espionage which intentionally prejudices the security or defence of New Zealand.
2. The bill has the potential to criminalise people who join friendship groups or solidarity organisations calling for freedom and human rights when these conflict with the policies of the government in power. For example the New Zealand government has condemned every act of Palestinian resistance but refused to condemn Israel’s genocide against the Palestinian people. It is clear solidarity groups such as PSNA could come under the threat of prosecution under this legislation if we liaise with Palestinian resistance groups when their actions are seen as opposed to US/New Zealand interests. Already the pro-Israel lobby frequently make claims along these lines when attacking those standing up for Palestinian human rights.
3. Similarly raising funds to support Palestinian resistance organisations, for example the PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine), could be threatened under this legislation despite the PFLP calling for freedom and equal human rights for everyone in a liberated Palestine.
4. As has been pointed out by other such as Maire Leadbeater, the legislation could be used to target critics of New Zealand foreign policy:
“There is also real concern is that this legislation could capture critics of New Zealand’s foreign and defence policy, especially if they liaise with a ‘foreign country’. There is a global movement of resistance to economic sanctions on Cuba and other countries including Venezuela, and North Korea. Supporters are likely to liaise with representatives of those countries, and perhaps circulate their material. Could that be considered harming New Zealand’s interests?”
5. The legislation reads like something from the days of the cold war. It is a threat to free speech and could have a chilling effect on the free expression of political beliefs in a democracy like New Zealand. We urge the Select Committee to recommend the legislation be dropped and not proceed to a second reading.
6. We wish to be heard at the Select Committee on this proposed legislation.
If you have any comments on this draft you’d like considered for inclusion please email Chair@PSNA.nz

Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign?
We will need some serious money to make our campaign as effective as possible. For example, we will need somewhere in the vicinity of $25,000 to bring speakers to New Zealand over the next year and organise large public meetings to help spread the message.
You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)

In Occupied Palestine daily newsletter – an invitation to subscribe from Leslie Bravery
Because of mainstream news media complicity, daily headlines and commentary only occasionally ever mention the relentless Israeli violence in Palestine, not even the frequent air strikes!
However, daily news and statistics regarding the violence Palestinians are forced to live under are regularly reported on in the “In Occupied Palestine daily newsletter”, sourced and compiled for easy reading and correlation chiefly from the Palestinian Monitoring Group's daily situation reports.
The In Occupied Palestine daily newsletter continues to be circulated, by email, worldwide to subscribers only, as it has been over the last two decades.
