Palestinians inspect damages at Al Shifa Hospital after Israeli forces withdrew from the hospital and the area around it following a two-week operation in Gaza City on April 1, 2024. REUTERS/Dawoud Abu Alkas

A special thanks to everyone who came out for Palestine at rallies, marches and vigils last weekend. It was heartening for Palestinians in Palestine and across the world to see the large numbers still marching a year after the genocide began.
But it isn’t over yet – Israel has brought the genocide to Lebanon now as well as INCREASING its attacks and slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza.

This is a time of deep shame for the New Zealand government and media and a time for concerted action against their complicity with genocide.

Banned by Stuff – the information Stuff don’t want you to see!

Last week Stuff newspapers told us they would not print this full-page advertisement which had been booked to go in all Stuff newspapers yesterday (Tuesday) At this stage Stuff has given no official reason for banning the add aside from saying they won’t do so “while the ongoing conflict is developing”

It seems that for Stuff, pro-Israel sympathies are more important that Palestinian realities.

It’s important to point out that Stuff has, over many years, printed full page advertisements from a Christian Zionist, Pastor Nigel Woodley, from Hastings. Woodley’s advertisements have been full of the most egregious and fanciful misinformation, Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism.

Our advertisement on the other hand is 100% factual and speaks truth to power – demanding our government hold Israel to account for its war crimes and 76-years of brutal military occupation of Palestine.

Something you can do now with just a few clicks…

Dear Stuff,

I was deeply disappointed in Stuff’s refusal to print the PSNA advertisement on the genocide in Gaza.

It seems to me your decision is part of a long pattern of Stuff’s Eurocentric reporting on Israel’s various wars against the indigenous people of Palestine.

Your use of only European news sources such as Reuters, AP, BBC and a host of UK and US newspapers which centre Israeli narratives, Israeli reasoning, Israeli explanations and Israeli justifications while only reporting Palestinians as helpless victims of Israeli “retaliations” is helping Israel avoid accountability.

In fact your reporting is prolonging Israel’s industrial-scale slaughter of Palestinians.

In the past you have printed the most awful anti-Palestinian racism in advertisements from the pro-Israel lobby but have refused to print a 100% accurate advertisement which hold Israel to account. Is the reason that your pro-Israel sympathies trump Palestinian realities?

On your website you invite people to subscribe to Stuff to “Help keep trustworthy journalism flourishing”. Why would you expect anyone to accept this statement?

Please respond urgently.

Appeal to NZ media: “Stop telling us porkies”

PSNA protest outside TVNZ on 7 October against TVNZ’s blatant pro-Israeli, anti-Palestinian reporting (Dean Purcell)

PSNA’s appeal to media a week before the 12-month anniversary of the genocide in Gaza to stop reporting debunked Israeli war propaganda as though it was true:

As the 12-month anniversary of the October 7th attack on Israel approaches, PSNA is appealing to New Zealand mainstream media to stop reporting Israeli war propaganda when it has already been comprehensively debunked.

For example, on TVNZ News tonight, 4 October, the presenter told us that in the October 7th attack “Hamas gunmen killed around 1200 people - mostly civilians”. This is repeating Israeli war propaganda. Even ABC News in Australia has reported on this debunked lie but a full year on TVNZ is happy to keep telling us porkies.

Israeli news reporters and independent journalists have investigated and found:

  • Most of the victims were either Israeli soldiers and police or army reservists. One analysis concluded "A total of 1,269 individuals were affected, predominantly military males aged 18-25

  • Many Israeli civilians were killed by Israeli military commanders adopting the “Hannibal directive” whereby it is better to kill or risk killing Israeli war captives than having them taken hostage or prisoner. Orders to attack any vehicle heading to Gaza meant hundreds of cars were attacked, killing hundreds of Palestinians and Israelis alike

  • After the resistance fighters broke out from Gaza there was a “second wave” of people who came through the fence and it appears this group were responsible for most of the war crimes committed on that day rather than fighters from the highly-disciplined resistance groups

  • There was no widespread sexual assault committed by the Palestinian resistance fighters against Israeli women and children as claimed by Israel

  • There were no beheaded Israeli babies, no foetuses ripped from slaughtered mothers, no children raped – all claims made by the Israeli propaganda machine

  • Israel has taken more than 9,000 counter hostages (held without charge or trial) from Gaza and the Occupied West Bank since October 7th

  • 6,400 Palestinians in Gaza are missing since October 7th

This is not to deny war crimes were committed on October 4th. Taking Hostages and killing civilians are war crimes which should be investigated and prosecuted by the International Criminal Court as the court has done in the case of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But the myriad war crimes of genocide and apartheid by Israeli leaders must also be investigated and prosecuted.

Canadian journalist and activist Naomi Klein summed it up well shortly after October 7th when she said "Side with the child over the gun every single time, no matter whose gun and no matter whose child."

So what are the debunked Israeli propaganda lies we are appealing to the media to stop reporting as though they were factual?

  • Hamas hates Jews and wants to kill every Jew in the world

  • Hamas beheaded babies, burned babies alive in ovens etc

  • Hamas used systematic widespread rape as a weapon of war against Israeli women and children.

  • Hamas uses civilians as human shields

  • Hamas educates Palestinian children to hate Israelis

  • Hamas has hijacked humanitarian supplies which is the main reason Palestinians in Gaza are starving

Looking at these one by one:

Hamas hates Jews and wants to kill every Jew in the world

In the latest Hamas charter from 2017, the organisation says

“Hamas reiterates that its conflict is with the Zionist project and not with the Jews based on their religion.”

“Hamas is not fighting against the Jews because they are Jews, but against the Zionists who are occupying Palestine.”

“Hamas rejects the persecution of people or the undermining of their rights on nationalist, religious or sectarian ground.”

In fact, their new charter goes further and Hamas accepts the state of Israel based on 1967 borders – precisely the same policy as the New Zealand government along with the US, the UK and most of the world!

Government condemns Palestinian resistance attack on Israel but no mention of 12 months of genocide in Gaza which started on October 7th

Here we go again – government hypocrisy on steroids!

From a PSNA media release 2 October 2024:

It’s appalling but not surprising to see the New Zealand government condemn Iran’s attack on Israel while refusing to condemn any of Israel’s inflammatory actions designed to provoke Iran into a wider Middle East war.

Israel’s deliberate provocations to create a wider Middle East war include:

“We are used to government hypocrisy in condemning every act of Palestinian resistance as terrorism but refusing to condemn Israel’s wholesale slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza or Lebanese civilians in Lebanon but latest this government tweet is hypocrisy on steroids,” says PSNA National Chair John Minto.

“Israel is the aggressor here, Israel is breaching international law, Israel is pushing to widen the war and yet the government points the finger at Israel’s victims”

New Zealanders are bigger than this level of unprincipled, cowardly response.

Quotes of the week

“As far as I'm concerned, Gaza should be hermetically sealed. We shouldn't provide them anything. Let them die of hunger, thirst, and malaria. I don't care, they are not my citizens, I owe them nothing”

-          Bezalel Smotrich, Israeli Minister of Finance

Never in history has violence been initiated by the oppressed…There would be no oppressed had there been no prior situation of violence to establish their subjugation. Violence is initiated by those who oppress, who exploit, who fail to recognize others as persons…”

Excellent Te Pāti Māori Statement on Israel & Iran

Press Release –Wednesday 2 October 2024

Over 41,000 Palestinian’s have been murdered by Israel in the last 12 months. At the same time, Israel have launched attacks against at least four other countries in the Middle East including Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Iran.

“You cannot play the aggressor and the victim at the same time,” said Te Pāti Māori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer.

“What we are seeing today is the culmination of decades of US imperialism in the Middle East. Iran has for a long time been a barrier to Western control in the region. This is what the West’s uncritical support of Israel has been leading up to” Ngarewa-Packer said.

“Meanwhile the New Zealand Government is in talks with the United States about joining AUKUS to further support their war efforts. This represents the next phase of global colonisation, and it is being negotiated behind closed doors,” co-leader Rawiri Waititi said.

“The US want to use Aotearoa as a Pacific spy base. This could mean the end of our longstanding nuclear free policy to allow their war ships into our waters.

“AUKUS threatens our sovereignty as an independent nation, and the Mana Motuhake of every nation in the Pacific. It threatens to drag Aotearoa into World War 3,” said Waititi.

“The New Zealand Government is putting everyone in Aotearoa at risk through their complicity. They must end all talks about joining AUKUS immediately. They must sanction Israel and cut ties with all countries who are committing and aiding war crimes,” said Ngarewa-Packer.

“As Tangata Whenua we will not allow our sovereignty to be determined by others, whether it is the New Zealand Government or the United States Government,” said Waititi.

Te Pāti Māori condemns the killing of innocent people. We condemn all actions that have led to today’s escalation of war.

Ngā mihi,

Te Pāti Māori

1.  Each week thousands of letters are going to all MPs – have you written your letter and sent it to us so we can get it to all MPs?

All the details you need to join the letter-writing campaign are on our website here

2.  Have you sent a letter of complaint to your local supermarket about selling Obela Hommus and other products yet?

Sample letter of complaint to your local supermarket

Kia ora,

I am asking you to withdraw Obela Hommus and other Obela products from your shelves because it is supporting the genocide in Gaza. Obela is owned by the Strauss Group in Israel which helps finance and provides “care packages” for Israeli troops involved in genocide in Gaza.

It is unacceptable to have such a product in the store, particularly as the International Court of Justice ruled last month that Israel’s occupation of Palestine is unlawful and that all countries should end any “aid or assistance” to Israel to maintain its illegal occupation.

Selling Israeli products in New Zealand supermarkets is assisting the Israeli economy enabling the occupation to continue.

Please stop selling this product which assists genocide and assists Israel to continue its occupation of in Palestine.

Please get back to me urgently.

More details of the campaign will be in the Obela Newsletter special later this week.

You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)
