Newsletter No 152

Kia ora koutou,

Thanks so much to everyone for the great response to the newsletter last week – we have many letters from supporters now going to every MP in parliament and Obela Hommus is on the run…

Keep piling on the pressure this week…

But firstly, have a look at this excellent video where the US Ambassador to New Zealand John Udall is called out by Christchurch activist Ben Vorderegger. The US ambassador was having coffee in Addington, Christchurch with Parliament’s speaker Gerry Brownlee and National MP Hamish Campbell.

US Ambassador to New Zealand John Udall

Now join in the action with this newsletter checklist:

1) Have you written your letter to MPs yet?

If not, please read the first item in the newsletter below with simple instructions what to do. If you have written one already then why not write another one this week?

2)  Have you sent a letter of complaint to your local supermarket about them selling Obela Hommus yet?

The yellow sticker will be available at your branch next week.

Watch this video of action inside Pak ‘n Save in Ōtautahi/Christchurch.  https://www.instagram.com/reel/C_GAZSFgGuS/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

The two main supermarket chains are

Foodstuffs: New World, Pak ‘n Save, 4 Square
Woolworths: Countdown and Fresh Choice

You can write a letter of complaint – a sample letter is below – and hand it in at your local supermarket or you can use a complaint form such as the one below for Woolworths.

Sample letter of a complaint to your local supermarket

Kia ora,

I am asking you to withdraw Obela Hommus from your shelves because it is supporting the genocide in Gaza. Obela is owned by the Strauss Group in Israel which helps finance and provides “care packages” for Israeli troops involved in genocide in Gaza.

It is unacceptable to have such a product in the store, particularly as the International Court of Justice ruled last month that Israel’s occupation of Palestine is unlawful and that all countries should end any “aid or assistance” to Israel to maintain its illegal occupation.

Selling Israeli products in New Zealand supermarkets is assisting the Israeli economy and provides the very assistance which enables the occupation to continue.

Please stop selling this product which assists genocide and assists Israel to continue its occupation of in Palestine.

Please get back to me without unnecessary delay.

<your name>

<your address etc>

3) Have you signed this petition yet?

 If not do so now!

4) Please put this poster on your social media pages.

World soccer body FIFA is due to announce shortly if it will expel Israel. Help it do the right thing and end apartheid Israel’s involvement in international soccer and international sport.

National campaign: Letters to all Members of Parliament!

Soon every Member of Parliament will be talking about Palestine!  Here’s our plan for how we will do it.

  • First, we will flood the offices of every MP with letters about Palestine.  Below is a letter writing guide to help you take action.

  • Second, on September 6 and surrounding days, we will have a Nation-Wide day of action against the National Party!  We will have protests outside their offices wherever possible.

Below is all the information you need to get started.  For this week, the focus is on getting letters and having organizers start planning for September 6.

Guide to writing a letter to all Members of Parliament!
The PSNA is holding a campaign to flood Parliament with letters for Palestine.

How it works:
All you need to do is write a ONE-page letter and send it to freepalestinenow20230@gmail.com

The letter can be hand-written and scanned or a word document/PDF.  Hand-written letters have the most impact.

We will then print 123 copies of it, add a cover letter to it, and send it to Parliament to be distributed.

If you wish to print and send your letter yourself, you can find instructions here: https://www.parliament.nz/en/get-involved/have-your-say/contact-an-mp/

In this case all you need to do is:

·         print 123 copies of your letter,

·         add a covering letter asking to distribute one copy to every MP,

·         Put them all (123 copies) into a single Envelope – A C4 envelope will hold them all

·         Send it to Parliament’s physical address. (see below)

·         NO STAMPS NEEDED – MESSAGES TO MPs ARE POSTAGE FREE.

Address:

·         All members of Parliament
·         Care of Distribution Services
·         Freepost Parliament
·         Private Bag 18 888
·         Parliament Buildings
·         Wellington 6160

What to say:
The most important things are to make the letter uniquely your own, to call for action for Palestine, and to address all Members of Parliament.  Your letter will not just be read by one Party - every single MP will read it!

If you wish you can talk a little bit about yourself and give some background information on who you are.

Here’s some useful things you might talk about regarding Palestine:

  • The genocide has been ongoing for 76 years, but has been at its worst since October 7th last year

  • The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has repeatedly spoken out against Israel including in the recent ruling on 19 July which declared Israel’s occupation in Palestine illegal.

  • The ICJ has stated that acquiring territory through war is illegal, and the settlements on Palestinian land are also illegal under international law.

  • Respecting international law means respecting the rights of Palestinians to their land.

  • The ICJ has ruled that Israel’s continued presence in Occupied Palestinian territory is unlawful and Israel must withdraw “as rapidly as possible.” Israel says it will ignore the ICJ.

  • International law is on our side.

  • New Zealand needs to get our troops out of Yemen. Why are we attacked people pressuring Israel to end the genocide in Gaza?

  • We need to act to ensure that New Zealand companies like Rakon cannot provide components to Israel for weapons.

  • We need to take strong action boycotting, divesting, and sanctioning Israel.

  • New Zealand needs to actively support South Africa’s International Court of Justice case of genocide against Israel.

  • We need to recognize the state of Palestine.

  • We need to increase funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) which is by far the most effective deliverer of aid in Gaza.

  • Over 15,0000 children have been killed - and this is still climbing.

  • Over 40,000 Palestinians have been killed with many thousands more missing under the rubble.

Use whatever information here you find useful, or use your own information. Variety to the letters is a good thing, so make the letter your own!

Call for an end to genocide in Palestine! Call for the end of Israel’s impunity for war crimes! Call for New Zealand to speak up and end our complicity though silence!

To sum up:
Write a ONE page letter that every MP will see and send it to freepalestinenow20230@gmail.com and we will get it sorted for printing and send it off.

Or if you wish, you can send it off yourself following the instructions above.

Nation-Wide day(s) of action: September 6

On September 6 (or close to it, if your centre cannot do September 6), we all want to be protesting National MPs.

At this stage we need organizers beginning to scope out what they can do and planning their protests. The first step is to find out what National MPs are in your electorate or nearby electorates:

https://www.govt.nz/browse/engaging-with-government/members-of-parliament/

Once you know which electorate MPs from the National Party are nearby, find their office and start planning a protest!  It is often a good idea to walk by in person to plan it out.  We are encouraging each centre to take their own approach to the protest, as each centre has unique capabilities and skills.

If you need any advice in planning this, please don’t hesitate to contact ShantiZA@gmail.com to ask for advice.  He has been working with our national strategy team to put together these events and has been running protests at MP’s offices in Christchurch.

If you don’t have a local National MP, feel free to get in touch and we can discuss ideas for what you might be able to do.

Government must follow UK lead and suspend Rakon bomb-component exports to the US

Media release from PSNA on Tuesday 3 September:

With today’s news that the UK government has finally begun to suspend arms shipments to Israel for its war on Gaza, PSNA is renewing our call for the New Zealand government to suspend exports of Rakon bomb components to the US for the bombs it sends to Gaza.

The UK government is suspending export of parts for fighter jets, helicopters and drones saying there is a clear risk the equipment could be used to commit serious violations of international law.

Even the US government has come to the same conclusion namely

“…given Israel’s significant reliance on U.S.-made defense articles, it is reasonable to assess that defense articles covered under NSM-20 have been used by Israeli security forces since October 7 in instances inconsistent with its IHL obligations or with established best practices for mitigating civilian harm”

The “US-made defense articles” the US government refers to almost certainly include smart bombs with Rakon components.

Auckland-based Rakon Limited has a long history of making crystal oscillators used in the guidance systems of smart bombs. Their 2005 business plan said the company’s objective was to dominate "the lucrative and expanding guided munitions and military positioning market" within five years.

The New Zealand government is trying to turn a blind eye to Rakon’s export of bomb components to the US which are today being sent to Gaza for the wholesale slaughter of Palestinians.

Already the United Nations Human Rights Council has passed a resolution calling for a halt to all arms sales to Israel which New Zealand has ignored.

Christopher Luxon must act immediately and suspend export of Rakon components for Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza.

Two featured reads

1) Israel is rudderless and Washington is going down with the ship

Tel Aviv has proven itself incapable of being a partner in any framework of peace, stability or cooperation. It remains incapable of interrogating its past, confronting its present, or envisioning a clear future. Israel is caught in the liminal space of being a project and a state, juxtaposed between an apartheid regime and a democratic nation, straddling the line between a start-up country and a mature nation. It oscillates between historical prophecy and modern reality, balancing the dichotomy of religious fanaticism and rule of law. It is an ethnocratic and overtly racist state, but it is heralded by western capitals as the “only democracy in the Middle East”. While actively engaged in ethnic cleansing, it simultaneously clamours for its “right to exist”.

This identity crisis feeds a vicious cycle. This mindset, which has long believed that Palestinian resistance can be quelled through occupation, massacres, exile, genocide and assassinations, will inevitably escalate the conflict. The existence of Israel as a project in the Middle East is not particularly striking. Amid regional countries emerging from the wreckage of world wars, themselves still nascent states, the fact that the victorious powers forcibly established Israel in the Middle East was unsurprising. It was a challenging endeavour, but one realised with the unwavering support of the victors. What is truly remarkable is the Palestinian resistance that has persisted for nearly a century, despite the overwhelming asymmetry in military, economic and diplomatic power. Israel has terminated any meaningful channels between Tel Aviv and much of the world. Most nations have learned that there is nothing to discuss or debate with Israel. Israel does not just have a Hamas problem; it has problems with all Palestinians, with the region and with international law. It is now time for both Palestinians and regional actors to negotiate directly with Washington about the Israel problem.

2) Namibia can do it – why not the Luxon government?

Namibia has blocked a vessel carrying military cargo destined for Israel from docking at one of its ports citing its obligation not to support or be complicit in Israeli war crimes. “Yes, I have asked Namport (Namibian Sports Authority) via the line ministry to consider the request to not allow the vessel MV Kathrin to dock in our ports,” the Justice Minister, Yvonne Dausab, told the state newspaper New Era, adding that the request was made on Friday.

Dausab said that her position meant she was responsible for ensuring that Namibia complied with its obligations under international law, specifically the Genocide Convention, to which Namibia was a party. “As such, it was necessary to engage authorities in Namibia on issues of concern to ensure our decisions and actions domestically are aligned with our obligations in terms of international law and our policy stance of many years on Palestine,” she is reported as saying. Dausab explained that upon receiving reports that a vessel may be carrying weapons intended for Israel, “I addressed a letter to Cabinet, international relations ministry, works ministry, as well as the safety and security ministry, advising and reminding them of our international obligations, not only under the Genocide Convention but also as articulated in the recent advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).”

You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)
