Kia ora koutou,

National rally for Palestine: Thursday 27 June, Wellington

As we reported in earlier newsletters, a national rally has been planned in Te Whanganui a Tara/Wellington for the 27th June. The Palestinian-led rally will begin at 11am at Te Papa and march to the beehive where a letter will be presented to the government demanding action to hold Israel to account for its genocide in Gaza. It will continue on and end up outside the US embassy. The organisers are making an open call for all groups around the country to attend and put pressure on the government to act.

We want to get as many people as possible to Wellington to support this protest event!

And part of that is the…

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Aotearoa Caravan for a Free Palestine

A ‘caravan’ or motor hikoi, where vehicles flying Palestinian flags travel in single file the length of the motu, is being planned to arrive in Wellington to join the national protest march to parliament.

The caravan/motorcade will work like a relay, running between cities and towns on route. As it passes through different areas people can join the caravan in their area for the day, for part of the day, or may decide to continue on to Wellington. There will be events/rallies held at some locations on the way – details still to come.

The expectation is that the caravan would build momentum as it travelled the country, and would gather people along the way.

There will be both a North Island and a South Island Caravan. These will converge in Wellington for the National Action on Thursday 27th June which starts on the steps of Parliament at 11am.

Groups who are not on the main route could form their own caravan to join the main one at an appropriate location. One way to visualise this is as tributaries joining a river which becomes bigger as it heads towards Wellington.

Details and timings are likely to change or will be updated. We have created a facebook page where all updated information will be shared. There will also be further information in next week’s PSNA newsletter.

The facebook page is called Aotearoa Caravan for a Free Palestine https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61560822632649

Please like this page to follow it and feel free to message us there if needed.

North Island Caravan

The North Island caravan will start at Te Rerenga Wairua (Cape Reinga) on Friday 21st with a dawn ceremony around 6 am and a departure at around 9am. Some people from the Far North will travel the whole way to Wellington.

The main route will be straight down through the North Island passing Kaitaia Kerikeri, Whangārei, Auckland, Hamilton, Taupō, Taihape, Palmerston North and on to Wellington. There will be events on route but details are yet to be fully finalised.

Somewhere near Palmerston North would seem to be the logical place for the North Island caravan to come together for the final leg into Wellington.

Government urged to abandon RIMPAC 2024 – the genocidal state of Israel is taking part

New Zealand must immediately withdraw from the 2024 US-led RIMPAC military exercises due to take place from June 26th  to August 2nd around Hawaii.

Israel is listed as a participating country.

“We are calling on our government to withdraw from the exercise because of Israel’s ongoing industrial-scale slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza” says PSNA National Chair John Minto. “Why would we want to join with a lawless, rogue state which has demonstrated the complete suite of war crimes over the past eight months”

“It’s hard to believe the government hasn’t withdrawn already”.

RIMPAC with Israel aligns New Zealand with a pariah state and its genocidal enabler, the US. Every day Israel displays flagrant disregard for international law and international humanitarian law.

Israel has dropped more bombs on Gaza in eight months than were dropped on London, Hamburg and Dresden during the full six years of the Second World War. Israel is dropping these bombs on one of the most densely populated communities in the world.

Tens of thousands of people – the majority being women and children – have been indiscriminately killed.

Taking part in a military event alongside Israel will leave an indelible stain on this country. It will be a powerful symbol of New Zealand complicity with Israeli war crimes. It’s not on!

The killing fields of Gaza are in our faces everyday as are Israel’s flagrant abuses of the Genocide Convention and the rulings of the International Court of Justice.

Our government has been making only piteous noises in criticism of Israel.

Withdrawing from RIMPAC would be a signal of solidarity with the victims of Israeli genocide and show that New Zealand takes seriously its responsibility to PREVENT genocide under the Genocide Convention.

Judith Collins

Kia ora Mr Luxon and Ms Collins,

Withdraw New Zealand from RIMPAC 2024 now!

We are asking you to immediately withdraw New Zealand from the 2024 US-led RIMPAC military exercises due to take place from June 26th  to August 2nd around Hawaii because Israel is listed as a participating country.

Israel is continuing its industrial-scale slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza. Why would we want to join with a lawless, rogue state which has demonstrated the complete suite of war crimes over the past eight months.

2) Sign this new petition calling for Israeli to be suspended from the 2024 Paris Olympics

Russia’s sports teams were banned from international competitions soon after its invasion of Ukraine. But as the Israeli military destroys everything in Gaza and has indiscriminately killed over 37,000 Palestinians, its sports teams play on.

Please sign this petition to call for the ban of Israel’s sports teams from international competition.

Were Rakon components in the bomb that killed at least 40 people – children and women included – at the UNRWA school in Nuseirat camp in Gaza? Highly likely

PSNA is renewing its call for the government to suspend exports of Rakon parts to the US defence industry following yesterday’s Israeli strike on a United Nations School in Gaza which killed at least 14 children and nine women.

The school housed thousands of Palestinian families fleeing Israel’s war on Gaza.

Rakon makes crystal oscillators used in the guidance systems of smart bombs. Their 2005 business plan says the company’s objective was to dominate "the lucrative and expanding guided munitions and military positioning market" within five years.

Rakon sends these “smart bomb” parts to US arms manufacturers which build the bombs which inevitably end up in Israel’s genocidal attacks on Gaza.

Al Jazeera analysis of bomb parts from the attack on the school indicates the bomb was made in the US by weapons manufacturer Honeywell. Does Rakon export directly or indirectly to Honeywell? We don’t know.

However, given Rakon earlier aggressive campaign to “dominate” the market for guidance systems for smart bombs, it seems highly likely the bomb that killed the people sheltering in a United Nations school carried parts produced at Rakon’s factory in Mt Wellington, Auckland.

Already the United Nations Human Rights Council has passed a resolution calling for a halt to all arms sales to Israel and two weeks ago the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to end its attacks on Rafah because of Israel’s indiscriminate slaughter of Palestinians.

Israel responded by launching 60 air raids on Rafah in 48 hours, killing dozens of Palestinians. The genocide continues.

However, by exporting parts for guided munitions and JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munitions) bombs which end up in the killing fields of Gaza means New Zealand is actively supporting Israel’s genocide.

Rakon’s statement regarding the Gaza genocide puts up straw arguments just to knock them down.

We have never claimed Rakon manufactures weapons nor that it exports products to Israel. We do claim the company provides crystal oscillators for use in the guidance systems of munitions made in the US which are then inevitably shipped to Israel. Rakon has not denied this.

An Amnesty International investigation released last December highlighted two incidents involving JDAM bombs which appear to be war crimes. Again it is highly likely the bombs used in these mass killing events (43 civilians killed – 19 children, 14 women and 10 men) had parts manufactured in Rakon’s Mt Wellington factory.

The UN’s Genocide Convention requires New Zealand to take action to prevent genocide.

The government must SUSPEND these Rakon exports and INDEPENDENTLY INVESTIGATE Rakon’s involvement in providing products for use in these guided munitions.

A welcome decision on support for UNRWA but the paltry level of funding is deeply disappointing

PSNA welcomes the government decision to continue funding UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinians) but we are deeply disappointed the funding will remain unchanged from previous years despite the massive increase in need from Israel’s war on Gaza.

UNRWA is by far the most important and effective organisation at delivering aid to Palestinians in Gaza.

On 1 March this year a wide range of aid organisations joined together to say this about UNRWA:

“UNRWA is the largest provider of humanitarian aid in Gaza. The plain reality is that UNRWA’s humanitarian role in this crisis is indispensable – including, but not limited to provision of health and education services, food and water provision, psychosocial support, and solid waste management – and cannot remotely be replaced by any other aid organization”

“Their role in the facilitation and delivery of life-saving humanitarian aid at scale in this crisis has been heroic. UNRWA’s supply of vital shelter, food, and basic services like sanitation, as well as the use of infrastructure by other aid organizations, is irreplaceable

Why are UNRWA’s heroic efforts and demonstrated effectiveness not been recognised by the New Zealand Government at a time when aid is so desperately needed?

The government providing $17 million to other aid groups for Gaza just doesn’t cut the mustard. These other organisations do good work but don’t have the infrastructure, the personnel or the reach to meet the needs of Palestinians on the scale or effectiveness which UNRWA has demonstrated year after year.

It seems clear the government has succumbed to pressure from the pro-Israel lobby which for years has sought to demonise and undermine UNRWA. Their campaign aims to undermine Palestinians’ status as refugees and remove their right to return to their land and homes in Palestine from which they are being progressively ethnically cleansed by Israel.

Part of this pro-Israel campaign involved the blatant lie that UNRWA staff were involved in the October 7th attack on Israel. Israel released its bogus claims within hours of the International Court of Justice finding a credible claim of genocide existed against Israel. It was a desperate, but successful, ploy with western media falling over themselves to print the phony information and downplay the ICJ ruling just as Israel intended. The Israeli claims were fact-free.

With the level of desperate need in Gaza we have urged the government to at least double and bring forward its contribution to UNRWA. The government is looking the other way.

The cost of pandering to the pro-Israel lobby is $17 million in poorly spent aid funding.

Hunger strike goes on - Write a short letter for Palestine

We have had 24 days straight of hunger strikes for Palestine!  Shanti Ahluwalia is currently on a hunger strike, following from Will Alexander.  He has a strong support team around him looking after his health and has asked to put out a call to action.

Here is what Shanti is asking you to do:

Write a short (~150 words) letter talking about Palestine and Christopher Luxon’s inaction – there is plenty on this (reports of inaction!) in the PSNA national newsletter.

Then email your local newspaper and they will consider publishing it!

Israel’s flag day a celebration of Israeli racism

Generations of Jewish extremists are injected by Israeli educational curricula with racism, hatred, and extremism against everyone who is not Jewish.

Israeli youth attacked Palestinians and journalists including the ABC reporter Allyson Horn during their march through the Muslim quarter of Jerusalem under Israeli occupation army protection chanting “Death to Arabs” and calling for “burning Arab villages down”.

Rebuilding the Gaza Centre for Human Rights

Damage to the Gaza Centre of Human Rights Office after an Israeli air attack in 2021

PSNA has been a long-time supporter of the Gaza Centre for Human Rights. The Centre is making an appeal for funds to rebuild at the earliest opportunity. New Zealander Julie Webb-Pullman worked at the centre for several years as an international expert on gathering evidence of Israeli war crimes against Palestinians in Gaza.

Before the latest Israeli attacks the centre had sent over 2000 claims of war crimes relating to Israel’s attack on Gaza in 2014 and its targeting the Great March of Return protests in March 2018.

We will have more about the centre in future newsletters.

We will need some serious money to make our campaign as effective as possible. For example, we will need somewhere in the vicinity of $25,000 to bring speakers to New Zealand over the next year and organise large public meetings to help spread the message.

You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)
